An Amazing Camera!

I upgraded to the Canon 7d from the Canon Rebel XTi and the changes are amazing.  I needed an upgrade since I was covering more sporting events in different venues.  Going from the Rebel XTi to the 7d there is an upgrade in frames per second (3 frames per second on the XTi, to 8 frames per second on the 7d), the 7d is better in low light situations as it allows you to boost your iso settings higher then the 1600 that the XTi was limited to.  Also the quality on the 7d is better at the high iso levels.  This camera shoots HD video and at first I thought "I'll never use HD Video so why do I need it?" well I was wrong.  I have it and love it! It opens up a whole new world of how to capture an event! If you're looking to upgrade to a new camera then dont overlook the Canon 7d! The perks that this camera has over the other cameras is amazing! I also highly recommend the battery grip for this camera since it will allow you to use 2 Canon Battery Packs or AA Batteries! Plus it also gives you a shutter release button when shooting vertically.

Excellent camera and excellent value!

You might think "excellent value" is a bit steep of a statement for a camera that is $1500 without a lens, but I've seen this camera produce results of it bigger brothers/sisters (5D and 1D) and really GREAT photos, amazing options, FAST FAST FAST high speed continuous shutter. This is not necessarily a "beginners" camera, but I could see someone saying, "I want my wife/husband/daughter/son/mom/dad to start with the best semi-pro camera because I can afford it and they will love it!" Has lots of versatile settings even for beginners.I previously owned the Rebel XSi, liked it a lot, but it completely felt like a toy compared to the solid build of this 7D.

what abt the image quality... any reviews????
I would go with the Canon over the Nikon. The 18MP block is awesome. If you're looking to save money, you can also look into the 5D or 600/T3I. They have the same size sensor, but are a little cheaper in the physical build, and don't have the same auto-focus options, etc. It all depends how much you are willing to spend and what you need it for.
