Work Horse Splitter

In 2007, I bought the 27 ton, 6.5 hp splitter model #241.77466.1. Let me first say I split approx 200 truckloads of firewood a year. (side business) This splitter has amazed me! I split all kinds of wood- oak, cherry, elm, ect. So far there has been nothing that will stop this machine! what it doesn't split, it shears right thru! I unbolted the side bracket on 1 side, welded a table to the bracket & re attached it. I now split 16 inch long, pieces of wood that 1 person alone cannot pick up by themselves. It also always starts & runs a long time on a tank of gas (important when gas is $3.00 a gallon). I highly recommend this product to everyone!

Warranty Service?

My experience certainly differed from the previous two reviewers. After splitting about 5 cords, the hydraulic valve (the one that advances or retracts the wedge) broke and the splitter was inoperable. Sears approved a repair and I took it back to the catalogue store where I had picked it up. They contracted the repair to a local company, and it took them over 3 months to get the valve replaced! I definitely wouldn't buy this splitter if you have to depend on using for business! Also the Briggs engine runs OK, but there is no accessible drain for the crankcase oil. Of course it burns enough I guess you can just keep adding oil without actually changing it. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the splitter with the Honda motor.

Great bang for the buck

I shopped around a lot for splitters and this one stood out as one of the best.  The vertical feature is especially nice with very large pieces.  I just finished some red oak that was wet and it went through it like it was nothing.  Easy to start, easy to move around, runs very quiet, and has the built in cradle for horizontal.  Putting the thing all together was a bit harder than I thought (time wise), but with the sale on top of a sale (I even used gift cards) and my Sears having it in stock, it was all a great deal. Quality seems great.  Now I just hope to get a bunch of years and wood out of my purchase.

Awesome

I purchased this unit last year and have had 0 problems. The best thing about this rig is its' starting charactoristics. From day one it has always started on the first or second pull. I have split hardwood logs 24" wide easily. I love it!!!!
