Best investment so far

Purchased this mower 1 yr ago. After reading many reviews both good and bad, the good won and I'm glad I listened. The negative things were the gas tank position and reverse cutting (which was correctable) the exhaust turned my yellow brush guard black on one side.As far as the dust storms, not going up hill, cutting blades cuts bad, deck heavy, no power up hill and gas pedal too far forward. I did not experience any of it. For what I paid my landscaper a year it paid for itself. After Sandy storm I pulled cart after cart of logs stumps and brush for weeks, dragged branches and never had a moment of hesitation. During winter I purchased the snow plow and even with out chains it pushed up to 5-6 inches of show. I wish it snowed more, I only got to use it 2 times. Driveway 200' long and huge turn around area. Worth every penny.

big dust storm maker!

it has a high vac fan blades it uses to cut grass, and it's a massive dust bath while mowing!!! it's a great mower other than that,I hate mine because they don't make any outher blades for it!!!

stands the test of time

I have had this lawn tractor for a number of years. It has been dependable and durable. I even bought the optional shade canopy so that I can enjoy cutting during the heat of the day. Has plenty of power and agility as it did on the 1st day I used it. The pedal drive makes it as simple as driving your car.

I love it

I have had this mower for 3 years and still love it. I am 5 ft 6 in and I do not have any trouble reaching the pedals. I bought the bagger for this but the only time I can really use it is in the fall when the grass is really dry, otherwise the chute clogs up and you have to keep cleaning it out. The chute vibrates loose where it comes together. I am going to drill holes it the two halves and put bolts in the two halves and use bungee cords to hold them together. I think that will work. I also want to put a mulching kit on it if they make one for it. I have not had any issues with the mower so far.

good lawn tractor

good lawn tractor, cuts well takes some getting use to the foot throttle {old mover throttle was set by hand}. stiff spring on foot throttle . dose not cut in reviser . only drawback . the 46 in deck just sticks out farther on one side. easier to cut along fence lines {old deck 42in}.

great mower for a fantastic price!

I purchased this mower from my local Sears store at a clearance price. It is November in upstate NY, not quite the time to be getting full use of the mower. I did put oil and gasoline in it and drove it around. Quite the machine, good power, nice steering radius, gas pedal [like the car] for speed control, nice bright headlights should I decide on night use, and most of all, it will accept many attachments for many other uses! I am pleased so far with my purchase!

Overrated !!!

I bought this Craftsman Lawn 21 HP 46" Deck Tractor Model 247.288852 two years ago and have had nothing but trouble. Previously, I had a Craftsman riding mower that I bought in 1984 made for Sears by Roper. This tractor I have now made by MTD will not last but 5 years. A piece of junk and I wish Sears would take it back. First the foot rest started to rust out under and black mat on each side. Second, when the Tech from Sears replaced it he stripped the bolt holding on the springs for the seat. Then the steering comes loose and I found that one of the lock nuts came off and the bolt was missing. It is on Page 34 Parts 4, 14 and 9. What was funny is that they are on in reverse with the lock nut on top holding the gear assembly down. The bolt was put on from under neath the assembly with the lock nut on top. Three times it has come loose and had no steering and lost the bolt. I replaced the bolt with one that I had, but I have a Tech coming next week to check it out before it goes out of warranty. I want to know why this steering comes loose with no control. In addition, my transmission drive belt came off the pulley one time while cutting the grass. Now I don't have power going uphill and I think the belt might be a little stretched out. It goes OK on flat ground but going uphill looses power. This should happen after only having this mower for only 2 years. I have checked the spark plug and the filter and everything is fine. I feel sorry for any person that is not mechanically inclined, because you will pay big bucks to get anything fixed. This Craftsman Lawn Tractor is not worth what I paid for it. Good Luck if you buy one, but I told you so...

Love it, Love it, Love it

I wasn't in the market for a new rider, as I got a used craftsman LT4000 42" cut off Craigslist 3 years ago. Found out it was made in 1991. It looks rough but runs great, even the headlights still work. However, I saw this one at Sears Outlet and the price was just too good to pass up. Since my parents are moving up here, it might not hurt to have 2 until they can get one. This thing is awesome. It runs great, has plenty of power to get up my hill in the front yard and saved me time with the bigger deck. It also already had the mulch kit installed which was a bonus. The yard looks great.

Seems sweet

Just picked it up yesterday and only cut a few strips. Yes the gas tank is kind of small and a little tricky to put gas into but I like the fact that it is completely hidden and protected. Yes I think I will put washers on the steering arms under the cotter pins and disconnect the plug that wont allow cutting in reverse. All in all seems like a great tractor. I bought a plow and chains and the 16 cubic foot cart too. I am an auto mechanic and will do my best to give an accurate review that is helpful. I am 5 foot 7 with a pretty big beer gut and was a little short for the pedals with the seat all the way back. Come on folks the seat is adjustable LOL. Seat is comfy. The deck is a little loud, again come on folks it is a mower not a cadillac. The deck is a little heavy duh its a 46 inch a longer lever would have made it lighter but then would have been more in the way. Fender mount levers are the best easy to get to. If I have problems in the future I will come back and tell you. Until then I consider this tractor awesome. It replaced an 18 hp Briggs 42 deck yard king with manual trans so this tractor is like a cadillac to me LOL

Great Mower, great buy!!

Got this mower a few months back. Have enjoyed every second on it. No issues so far. Great cut and rides like a champ up steep inclines. Even though my yard is moderately hilly, I've had no issues with scalping. I would like to mow in reverse, but I actually read reviews and looked and the specs before I bought so no surprises. Gas economy is great too. I've mowed 3 times so far and only filled up once. The seat is nice as well as the steering wheel. Great buy for the $ and l look forward to the next time I use it!

Expensive mistake

Went from a 14 year old 12.5 HP 40-in Murray to this MTD made Craftsman. My old Murray was better. The 21 HP engine is very underpowered & bogs down in 3-in grass where the 12.5 HP Murray didn't. Mower cuts horribly. Yard looks like a wreck after using this mower. Floating deck digs in & scalps at every bump. Slight slopes the mower scalps on one side & leaves grass tall on other. Scalps in sharp turns, even going slow. Drive petal very stiff & hard to keep engaged on bumpy lawn. Dust boils up all around the deck going over bare ground. Grass & dirt blows up on deck from left front corner & often leaves a cut grass line on lawn. Brake not strong enough to keep mower stopped when drive petal engaged. Have to stop & disengage blades every time you back up. Do not buy this mower if you have an uneven or bumpy yard or if you have a lot of bushes or landscaping. Do not buy if you don't have a strong right foot/ankle. Do not buy if you are under 5'8". Do not buy if you have asthma!!!!

No Snow Blower for tractor

I bought the tractor and then found out that Sears does have a snow blower to fit it. The tractor mows well but the bagger needs some improvements - plugs up a lot and comes off at the deck.

Tractor

Was unaware that the tractor deck had to be disengaged before you could go in reverse. It's a real pain to do this when you have to move back and forth at least 20 times. Very poor engineering!!

Nice cut, but I wouldn't use it for more than an acre

I like this mower in general, it's my 3rd Craftsman. I can mow my yard in about 30-40 minutes. I wouldn't go much longer than that because the engine gets quite hot.

I don't like the Briggs & Stratton engine maintenance, however. They give you a 5 cent piece of plastic to aid in changing the oil...might as well be a party gag dribble glass. The valve is hard to reach, hard to re-seat, and hard to turn all due to close quarters. What a joke! How about a valve with a 1/4 thumb twist where the oil falls straight into the bucket? It's 2013 already...you could have put that thing wherever you wanted...why there? Everything under the hood is thin plastic covered as well. Must be a better construction method for a $1200 mower's engine.

Back away folks, there's nothing here to see.

What a nightmare thus far with this horrible excuse of a mower! I mean, you can't go wrong with the 'ol Craftsman name, right? At least with this particular mower, I was so very wrong. Bought the bundle, another biiiig mistake. Here it is in short: Deck vibration so bad I couldn't engage blade on immediate start up. Brake does not work. Bagging system is cheap and requires a 4 step process to take off and put on that will drive you MAAAAAD! And the #1 problem? It's not even a Craftsman. The darn thing is made by MDT folks! Didn't know that Craftsman does not actually make ANY mowers, they just stick their name on the side. So far Sears is exchanging with a "Craftsman" that is made by Husqvarna. Guess those are the better ones? Will spend the extra to upgrade. Hope this solves my disappointment. Also, don't waste your time with Sears.com or online help. They are worthless. I finally had to go into local store and talk to a manager. Good luck.

46" 21 HP Craftsman Lawn Tractor

If you are under 5'7, forget this mower! I am 5'3 cannot reach the brake pedal. I almost went through the garage wall...I couldn't get it to stop.
This should have been included in the Specs. I also could not move the deck lift lever...It was EXTREMELY hard to move. I had to have my neighbor to move it to 5. When I tried to do a second mow, a huge spring broke off and fell into the drive belt causing the belt to burn. I had a SEARS serviceman come out and I had to wait 2 weeks for service...this is the usual time for a service man to come out. He had to unwind the uncoiled spring from the axle. It took 7 minutes to unwind the spring and remove it. He then had to install another spring. All this after my 1st mow. I thanked him for coming out, but explained that I would be returning the mower. He understood and admitted that it was
not made well. I was disappointed and have to look for another rider. In the meantime, the grass is almost a foot high again.!

is the warranty still good on my 2011 riding mower
by EDWARD JAKOBY

Hi! If that is your exact mower it has a "General Warranty: 2 year full, 5 year frame limited lifetime front axle" . Go click on the orange letters in the link telling what the item is. That takes you to the Sears.com item's listing page which shows warranty info in the description. If you bought the protection agreement go here: sears.com/shc/s/nb_10153_12605_NB_ProtectionAgreements?adCell=AF&redirectType=BRAT_RULE&prop17=protection%20agreement . There's a phone number on that page link I listed if you need to call for more help. Hope that helps!

did we purchase extended warranty on this item?

Hi! If you purchased this and used your SYWR member number and it's a fairly recent purchase you can look under "View your account history" and it should tell you if you actually did purchase the extended warranty. If you purchased it locally at a Sears store you can contact that same store and they can probably give you that information. It's also possible that searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action might be able to help you.
