Better than a tap and die set

This set of thread chasers is better than owning a set of taps and dies for most work done with damaged threads.

Unlike a tap or die that can literally cut new threads on top of existing threads, thread chasers are designed to work with existing threads to reform them and clear out contaminants that may be choking the threads ability to match its complementary threaded fastener.

I used to do thread restoration as part of my Army direct support Machinist activities and owned several sets of smaller male and female thread chasers.

This one Craftsman set covers a pretty comprehensive size range of S.A.E. and Metric threads, all in one easy to keep track of, easily stored container.

The thread files can even be used to reform threads on the beginings of bolts and studs, to allow the chaser nuts to be used for fully restoring the whole fastener's threads.

The price of the thread chaser set is quite reasonable, too.

The only other set of thread chaser that might be nice to have right away would be the set of Craftsman sparkplug hole thread chasers.

A cross-threaded spark plug hole is just going to ruin your WHOLE day.

There are, of course, additional thread chasing tools to be had, involving either the Internet or "the Truck".

But, this set is going to take care of a high percentage of most folks needs, at a very reasonable price.

I wish I had this set, during my three year tour in the Army.

However, at the price they're sold for, I got a set for my very own SELF at one of the local Sears stores.

Highly recommended.

Weak metal

This set and the 40 piece set are made of weak metal and the taps are not sharp. The taps will bind and possibly break when you try to clean out rusty threads. This set might be ok for light work but I would recommend one of the other more expensive sets. See my review for the 40 piece set.

The correct way to clean already established threads

Great price. It's looks eeriy familiar and almost identical to the top brands. This is a tool for anyone that rebuilds. You do not want to use a tap and die set to clean or straighten threads. You only use them to cut new threads. This is common error people make. This set is pretty inclusive. Use the right tool for the job makes the results that much better

Great tap & die set!

This a a great tap & die set for less than $70.00. It's offers both tap and die capabilities, in both sad and metric sizes. It comes with a tap wrench and tap restorers as well. Tap and die sets from craftsman have no warranty on them, so be carefull when using the small taps. One can break them very easily. When used properly this set is a great set.

This is the tap set you need....

This thread chaser set is a must if you are working on old anythings.  I worked on older aircraft for years and finding damaged threads, especially in aluminum, was common.  A little work restoring the threads and the part attached like new.

I was helping a friend change a clutch on an imported car years ago.  The clutch cable mounted to the bell housing with a plastic threaded fitting.  The threads were thin to begin with and were damaged when removing the cable, would not re-seat.  A little tune with the thread chaser and the fitting glided back into place.  I have had to do the same thing with triangle files in the past, no fun at all.

You need this set!

Thread Restorer saves!

I've had this set for probly over 5years and it has saved me many times. I would much rather save a nut or bolt or even a wheel stud than have to replace the part. I have used it mainly to save damaged wheel studs.  The files are very handy also for that last helpful fix.

Craftsman 48 pc SAE amd Metric Thread Restorer Kit, good quality

First let me state that I have a large collection of tools.  Mostly Craftsman, but also a respectable number of Snap-On, Mac Tools, and Matco Tools.  I buy Craftsman as I feel they are a very good value for the home mechanic, DIYer, or tinkerer.

I ordered this set as I was replacing a water pump on my brothers diesel truck.  The replacement pump was a rebuild and expensive, and we had to wait for delivery.  We didn't want to return it for another rebuild.  Most all of the bolt holes were damaged when we received it but not destroyed.  They were also metric.  I have a large Craftsman tap and die set but it is SAE only.  Here was my excuse to buy a thread restore kit.

My local Sears did not have it on the shelf, nor did the larger Sears 'in town'.  My local store was able to order it for me (shipped to my house, not in-store pickup).  Upside is that I did not have to pay shipping.  Down side is I had to pay state tax.  I went this route as it did save me a couple of bucks and actually arrived at my house sooner then if I ordered on line.  Thanks local Sears store owner.

This set is the first thread restorer kit I've owned, so I have no other to compare it to.  With that said it is a good quality tool.  I had to repair a lot of 8mm bolt holes and a few bolts.  After completing the job, the tools show some marks from use, but no wear.  I like that the kit contains multiple pieces of the same size for common sizes.  What I don't like is that it does not have an equal balance between SAE and metric, containing more metric pieces.  Most of what I work on is older U.S. cars/trucks/tractors.  So, for my use a balance between the two standards would had been appreciated.  This is NOT why the tool set lost a star as I do understand most machines have gone the way of the metric system.  Political view withheld.

The case is where this set lost the 5th star.  The case over all is ok for a foriegn made cheap tool, but does not stack up well against other Craftsman tool cases I own.  Most of the pieces fit well into the case.  The problem comes from the smaller bolt thread chasers.  The case molds are just not deep enough to hold the pieces in place at all.  There is the standard piece of foam included with the set that is designed to hold pieces in place with the lid shut, but it is undersized for the task.  I imagine this is done to save a penny along the way.  Shame too as this is, from initial impression and first-time use, a good quality set of tools.  It is a wast to cut corners  on the case and loose a 5-star rating.  Come on Craftsman, the economy is slow, we're all feeling it.  But really, a less then impressive injection molding case?  You were so close.  I hope Craftsman reads these reviews.

Over all a great tool.  As I use it more I'll be able to gauge it better in terms of fair-wear-and-tear.  Just wish I had a quality case to go with it.  One that will hold all the tools in place when the case gets turned this way and that when passing into and from the tool box.

A very high quality product and made in the USA

I purchased my set about a year ago and I have used it extensively to repair damaged bolt threads and to clean up tapped holes when you do not want any of the original material removed.  I do a lot of car restoration work and if a customer wants the original fasteners to be reused in certain areas for judging criteria.  I will run the them through the thread restorer to remove years of rust to put the fastener back to as manufactured size.  And I will run the chasers through the any tapped hole that has had paint or rust find its way into it which interferes with the bolt fit.  I always just use a little Tap-Magic when using them and I have had nothing but success.  Made in the USA.  Great Product.

This thread restorer set works!!

This 48 piece thread restorer set works!  While rebuilding a belly mower for a tractor, I found some of the threads were stretched on the bolts I removed from the gearbox which needed replaced.  Using the metric thread chasers, I was able to restore the threads in the mower deck.  Using the metric dies, I was able to restore the threads on the bolts holding the scalp roller assembly to the deck.  On my older equipment, the SAE tools came in handy after removing nuts that had to be heated with a torch to remove them.  I would recommend using some type of cutting oil when using this set and you won't be disappointed.  This 48 piece set should be basic equipment in any mechanic's/handyperson's tool box.  Definitely one of the best Craftsman tools out there.--J from PA

Thread Restorer

This tool proved to be a lot more useful than I expected. I am rebuilding / restoring old lawn tractors. I have already used this tool at least 5 times in the past couple of weeks, for reforming threads in aluminum castings, "cleaning" threads on bolts and on other steel parts. Much better than a tap set because it does not remove metal, it reforms it.

Pays for itself

I bought this set to repair threads on an alternator that was damaged when removing the pulley. Took ten minutes to file the damage down, and use the thread chaser, and it was good as new, the nut turned all the way down by hand. If you have an older car, you can't make a better investment. Had the same issue with a spark plug insert not too long ago during a tune-up. The thread chaser saved my butt again. Don't be afraid to purchase this one, great craftsman quality as usual

Good set

Worked fine for fixing the spark plug threads on an old 3 wheeler head. It was the only set I could find that had the 12mm w/ 1.25 thread pitch chaser I needed.
