Great functions for the price. 50amp Start with auto shut off.

I have had a couple chargers over the past 10 years. This one seems well built. It has a 50 amp start function for $40. It appears to be a great value after looking at a few other stores and online.

Don,t waste your money.

I got this battery charger for a birthday gift. The battery charger I had before for over twenty years was a Centuary. It cost around $100.00.I have used it this charger three times to charge up my diesel truck. Well the cabels touched Pos.& Neg. instint death to the charger. There is no circuit breaker on it if this happens. Spend a few dollars more get a centuary or shumaker.

good basic unit

seems like a good basic automatic charger. used it to charge the daughters battery when she left the light on in her car. used the 10 amp setting and left it on overnight. indicated fully charged in the morning.

Charges OK

The 10amp charging mode seems to work well. However, the 50amp "Engine Starter" setting could not turn over the engine of my Craftsman riding lawn mower. I would not recommend it if you need that function to work.

When on sale... and it is automatic.

If you can catch this on sale for about half, for an automatic charger that could be left on for days or more.... and if they last half as long as the last one I bought 30 years ago and still going with minor repairs (replaced clamps and power cord with 25' cheap extension cord, but missing carry handle), these are a deal.

Only time will tell on these imports (Mexico) and why the four star instead of five, but these do have a 3 year warranty.

If you have the time, no battery likes to be over charged, but modern high amperage auto batteries with close internal plates don't like to be cycled dead to full charge very many times before they are junk. This model seems to tickle recharging slowly before coming to full power on 10 amp automatic... it may start off at 1 amp or less, but give it time to do it's job automatically.

I have noticed with the 50 amp boost, let it charge for a few minutes before trying to start whatever and it will not trip the overheat switch as quickly. I also purchased the larger 250 amp 'manual' charger made in Mexico for a lot more money and it states 3 seconds maximum while waiting 240 seconds before next try and basically a two person operation because one cannot do it that fast.

That said, this 'automatic' unit and a portable battery booster on sale makes more sense for normal use and emergency.... as you have an automatic charger that does not overcharge for maintenance duty, or bringing a battery back to full charge slowly, as well as a moderate 50 amp boost, but also a cordless battery booster for emergencies that puts out as much or more power than any of the chargers for less money.

Good charger bad clamps

I have two of these and they work great, compared to all the junk out there. I Wish the clamps were better quality. I treat my stuff with alot of care and never abuse but the wire came off of one of the clamps but I was able to crimp it back on. If I didnt catch it cant imagine the damage it could have caused.

An excellent quality battery charger

This is an excellent quality charger that will maintain the charge on a battery after charging it so you don't have to worry about unplugging it or that the battery will over charge. It also has a starter function is a bit small in capacity but might be just enough to start a small to med size auto. Overall very pleased with price and charger.

Powerful, Gets the Job Done!

My old reliable charger, (Grandfather of this model, but 25 years old), finally died when I loaned it to a neighbor and they dropped it on a concrete floor. Hoping this one lasts even half that long! First use, I had a large-capacity battery for an older car with a very big, high-compression V-8 engine. The alternator died, so it was run down to nothing. This charger brought it to maximum full-charge in about an hour. I like the automatic shut-off when full charge is reached, and it also signals that with a bright green LED light. So I could tell from across the dimly-lit garage that it was done.

A great choice for buying a charger

I always look to Sears for great products and I need a battery charger and that's why I went to Sear's. It is compact and very easy to use.

Dumb and brutal charger

This is a very primitive charger with a 100%-analog circuit designed probably somewhere in early 70s. And they probably have not even updated its manual since that time (?Add distilled water to each cell...? ? Come on! Where can you find a non-sealed battery these days?). Its ?automatic? trickle-charge feature is so dumb and brutal it could easily fry a smaller battery. If you want to refresh some old memories associated with your grandpa?s garage equipment then buy it. Otherwise get a digitally controlled charger like Schumacher SSC-1000A. It will do a whole lot better job and cost less.

Budget charger/starter does the job

This charger replaced a 20-year-old unit that finally gave up. Only used once since purchase. During a record cold snap, car battery died in garage. a couple of minutes on the 10-amp setting and the car started right up. Didn't even need to resort to the 50-amp boost setting. Automatic, but basic. Does what it says.

Clamps are wimpy and dangerous

The charger is fine, but Sears would be very hard-pressed to find cheaper battery clamps. I have a 40 year old charger that I bought at a garage sale that has excellent clamps.

This piece of junk - lousy crimped clamps, no strain relief... Both clamps failed after only a couple uses. CHECK THE CLAMP CONNECTIONS WITH EVERY USE. I found afterwards the last time that one of the clamps was held on by a single thread of copper. Lucky it didn't catch on fire.

Cheap cheap cheap junk. What a waste.

I'll go out and find some DECENT clamps, but I spent the money on this so I'd have a NEW charger that does whatever really cool new stuff a battery charger is supposed to do.

But it was not to be.

I guess I'll start looking at garage sales again.

High quality charger

Offers three charge levels - 2amp, 10amp, and 50amp if you need a quick start. Quiet operation. Very reliable. If I needed a battery charger I would buy this one again.

Good Value For The Price

This is an all around good battery charger. Granted that there are other chargers on the market with more options, but if you are looking for a simple and easy to use battery charger for your car or lawn tractor then this is your best bet.
