Ingersoll_rand 20 gal Air Compressor

This compressor is much higher quality than my old Sears air compressor that had a cast iron belt driven pump. It is quieter as well. The water drain valve is much better quality iand easier to use. It comes with a nice quick disconnect air hose fitting already installed. The included synthetic compressor oil allows it to be run at 100% duty cycle. I have no complaints about it at all and would buy another. Note that Sears has it listed as weighing 90.7 pounds. It is actually 90.7 kg or 200 pounds. Sears sent me a UPS tracking number when it actually went by truck freight.

Beware of Ingersoll-Rand motor sparking issue

This was a Fathers Day present from my two little boys to replace my 20 years old 15 gallon craftsman oil less compressor. I was so excited that I had to use it right a way to fill up some bicycle tires for my two boys. The compressor was quiet compare to my oil less unit. I used it for about ten minutes and put the unit away. The next day I decided to use it to run a air ratchet. It was going great for about 20 minutes than suddenly my air ratchet started to slow down and the compressor did not kick on. I checked the breaker on the motor and it was tripped. I pressed the switch down to reset the breaker and the motor started up but was sparking. The breaker tripped again. I pressed the breaker switch again and the same thing happen again. I have about 30 minutes of use out of this compressor and it is broke already. I expected this thing to last longer than my oil less unit which I had to fire up to complete my project. After some searching around on the Internet this seems to be an issue with IR compressors. If you are interested in this compressor please research IR motor sparking issues before you purchase IR compressors. This is an expensive part to replace if fails after the 1 year warranty runs out.

Bought Because I Got a Good Deal

I bought this compressor for $200 at an auction selling Sears returns. It had a pinhole in one of the welds giving it a slight leak. Being a professional fabricator/welder, this did not bother me. I was able to patch that up in about five minutes.

It is disturbing though at some level, that IR let it go out of the factory with a poor weld. The quality of the IR projects is not what it used to be 15+ years ago. That being said, they are one of the better products without going to Champion, Speedair, or one of the other brands that will run you twice as much.

Right after I bought this compressor, my 80 gallon compressor at my home shop went out so I have been working off of this. It has run impacts wrenches and air ratchets with no problem. I have yet to try to paint with it or run sanders and grinders which use more air. The main reason I bought it was to run a texture gun in the house for part of a re-modeling project so I hope it will keep up with the texture gun. Last time I did this I ran 500 feet of air hose from the shop to the house.

Pros:
- well made for its class/size
- one of the quietest compressors I have ever owned
- portable
- 115 volts
- 100% duty cycle
- scaled down version of a large (light) industrial compressor

Cons:
- quality control
- craftsmanship not what it used to be
- HEAVY for a portable compressor (200 pounds)
- not oilless so it takes more maintenance that most DIY people are used to doing on compressors

Bottom Line:

If you need a portable compressor that will work hard, this is a good option. I would recommend it over a Craftsman, Kobalt, Husky, or any of the other home owner brands all of which I have seen have durability issues. If it was not for the quality control issues I would have given it 5 stars. Keep in mind that this is based on only a few hours worth of run time so I can not comment on the long term durability. Also, if you do buy it, make sure to keep up on the preventative maintenance such as changing the air filters and the oil.

Ingersoll rand air compressor

We are extremely happy with our purchase of the Ingersoll rand air compressor. It is very quiet and powerful. My husband was looking for a high rated PSI compressor and he did his research. He is more than impressed with it. We purchased the additional warranty offered by Sears but hoping to not need it. I highly reccomend this product.

Great little compressor!

Its built heavy and solid. Doesn't put out a lot of CFM but for its size and price it should last a life time! Its fairly quiet all so.

Disappointed so far...

Not too happy at this point. I purchased this unit with the intention of occasional use in my home garage. I was expecting a superior product based on many years of experience in using IR compressors including the type 30 in a HD truck/heavy equipment shop. Got the unit home and assembled in short order and was quite pleased so far with the quality of it however this mission was stopped in it's tracks because the bottle of synthetic oil supplied in the box to fill the crankcase was not even a sufficient enough quantity to bring it to the add mark on the sight glass!! So now I'll need to waste who knows how much time locating more of the same Ingersoll oil because the local Sears store that I purchased this unit from does not carry any. The whole thing really ticks me off !! So the jury is still out on this one, hopefully it's not a harbinger of things to come.

This little giant packs alot of power runs quite and never lets you down , as long as your air tools are going it keeps on pumping, I used it on axle nuts, control arms, etc. built like a tank yet quite as a mouse.

Great compressor

This compressor does a great job keeping up with demand. It's even large enough to blow out my sprinkler lines. Very quiet compared to others this size.

Portable and reliable

Small, but gets the job done. If you need a small, but powerful air compressor this is the one to purchase. I'm not a professional mechanic, but every household needs an air compressor. You can add the accessories, which gives you more for your money. It's a quality compressor, get quality accessories.

Nice compressor

This compressor is definitely a step up from any store brand. 100% duty cycle and a cfm rating that will handle most homeowner or shade tree mechanic tools. Much quieter than the cheap direct drive compressors. With a couple inexpensive mods its even quieter. On sale the value can't be beat!

Very quite but low quality

I had to return two of these because of quality problems. One had a defective motor that had to be constantly reset and the other had a regulator air leak out of the box. Sears was nice enough to take back both units and refund my purchase.

worked great right out of the box

bought this compressor to go with a plasma cutter, it had minimal set up requrements, it had no leaks after letting it build to max pressure and is still holding max pressure. I will have to put in a seperate breaker and outlet for it to make sure it has the proper voltage and amps to run good, it is very quiet for an air compressor, I reviewed alot of compressors and this one was the best for the price and what i needed it for. I do plan on using it for other jobs such as impact wrenches and other air tools.
