It Just Works

Can't write much of a review with only 3000 characters, right? See ******. Allowed more space there. Basically, Kenmores are a bunch of junk, along with everything else made in China these days. This is no different, but it works. If yours doesn't work, then take it back. Get another and repeat if necessary. Mine works, and I'm happy. I bought it at local Sears just so that I could return it if necessary. Luckily, no issues as of yet. My bedroom has high ceilings and a 1 gallon Vicks humidifier doesn't do anything. This, on the otherhand, has enough capacity to burn through two gallons a night and maintain 40%+, even with a space heater running.. On the weekends, I'll run it down the hallway on F4 all day, burning through 6 gallons/day and maintaining 30%-40% depending upon how long my central heat runs. Prior to using this, my house has averaged 16%-25%, especially with the "polar vortexes" driving the temps really low and the long run time of the central heat. I have a very large house, but this does a good job. I can get most of the house up to 35% after running this for a few hours and up to 40% if running this all day on high. The areas near this can maintain 40% on low. The downstairs slowly get up to where I need it and maintains as long as this is on high. But then, my house is larger than what this is rated for. I have moderately hard water and using tap water along with the oldon Solution Combination Water Treatment and Bacteriostatic #246 works well. Just a few capfuls per tank, which holds two gallons. In fact, the base holds two gallons also. I have had no leaks. The pad stays moist. It has remained clean for the two weeks that I've owned it. Today, I let it dry out so that I could wipe (wipe, not scrub) the little dirt from the base. I'll likely run the filter in the dishwasher with two cups of white vinegar in a week or two. The water treatment doesn't smell, and keeps mold from growing in the filter. If you've ever owned a swamp cooler, you know those things stink after a while. Not this. Just use the additive and replace the filter if it gets gross (1-2 months). Yes, it's flimsy, so be careful if moving it. The fan part sits on the base in these little tracks. Failure to line it up can result in leaks. The tank leans on it. So if pushing on carpet, you might want to be careful and let most of your water evaporate before you even try it. I've had it on carpet for two weeks with no issues. F1 is fairly quiet. If you are very sensitive to noise in your bedroom, then move it into your bathroom or at least 10 feet away. I had a cold, and this was great at adding cool moisture to help me sleep. The auto feature to turn fan on/off is great. Ability to use tap water, large capacity, ability to work in very large rooms all are pros. Wimpy construction is a minor negative, but as long as you don't man-handle it, you shouldn't have any issues.

Very disappointed with the quality construction and design

I have had 3 humidifiers prior to this one from Kenmore and have been super happy with them. Almost cried when the last one died out out wear. This new 12gallons is deceiving, it's the output not volume capacity to hold water. The construction is very poor, the plastic wellds for the water tank are very rough, not even and the tank is kind of cocked. The water tank fill up is on the side and makes it almost impossible to fill up unless you fill it in your tub or have a big bathroom sink. As the water level goes down and the resevoir tank releases water, it sounds like a toilet being flushed and will wake you up in the middle of the night 5-6 times depending on fan velocity. I could careless about the inaccurate humidity digital reader, but I do care that the fan speed 2 died after 2 weeks. I am not returning it, because I threw out the box and I'm not carrying this mini R2D2 back to the store. I am upset and disappointed with the construction quality and very poor design. I am a big fan of Kenmore appliances, but this one takes the cake for the worst appliance I have ever bought from Sears.

Don't purchase!!

|

I purchased this item yesterday and when I set it up the "F" was flashing which indicates that I need to fill the unit. It was full. Also, I was unable to change the fan setting. After looking at the manual it seems there is a part missing (Support, Float #830496-2). This part is no longer available. So, Sears on line offered me coupons. Coupons for what??? They also said I might be able to find a replacement part in my local parts store. What? Now I need to go searching for an after market part? I want a humidifier that works. I'll take it back to the store today. I hope I can return it as others have said they couldn't return it.

DESPITE BAD REVIEW

|

I rated this with 1 star as that is where I always look first.
Yes it is constricted of plastic, BUT it is not cheap easily breakable plastic.

The filling of this is very easy. I use it for a 2,500 house and it really does the job.

Only thing is when you set it to automatic it seem to go on and off too frequently, so I just keep it on the lowest fan setting,

I would definately buy this again. GREAT MACHINE!!!!

So far... I like this humidifier. It is light, easy to operate and quiet.

|

I owned two larger Kenmore humidifiers (that I rated as excellent) before purchasing the 12 gallon Kenmore. It is the right size for a space approximately 1000 sq ft. The 1.9 gal bottle is easy to fill and the entire unit is light enough to move from one location to the other. It is relatively quiet. It does however gurgle when water empties from the bottle to the base reservoir. The filter is easy to replace, but it seemed to need replacing quite quickly the first time around. I did like this unit enough to purchase a second one for a relative.

Floridians

We purchased this for our son as his family moved to Ohio from Florida. They could not believe how much better their house feels with the raised humidity.

Still running well, year 3

|

Originally bought the similar, smaller model years ago. It didn't last too long, maybe a season and a half. I then went with an ultrasonic. The air in my home was then filled with fine white dust (minerals spewed into the air when using hard water) which strangely caused the flames on my gas stove in the next room to turn pink. After developing a chronic cough from breathing in that dust, I got rid of the ultrasonic and decided to give this type of humidifier another chance, purchasing this larger model.

I think I've now had this humidifier for 3 years and it is still operating well. I am using the actual Kenmore 14906 replacement filter this time around, instead of a bargain brand. I think that's the reason this humidifier is lasting much longer than the smaller one did. It is mold and mildew resistant and fits well into the unit. When I used the cheaper replacement filters with the smaller unit, it eventually emitted a musty odor, probably from bacteria buildup.

I am filling it with water from an undersink water filter instead of out of the tap, since my water is very hard. Not all of the minerals are being removed, but this filtered water is better than ruining the unit with tap water.

A filter lasts about 8 weeks or so -- when I see the unit running for days without running dry, I then know it's time for a change. I clean out the reservoir area with Soft Scrub, and it is then good as new. I also blow any dust out of the fan portion with my vacuum. Then it goes back to running well, going for less than 24 hours on two fills of the tank. I have it on F2 fan speed and it makes the dry air in my house comfortable again.

I recommend this unit strongly -- no mold buildup (using the actual name brand Kenmore replacement filter), and no harmful dust to breathe into your lungs (ultrasonic humidifier).

Good Humidifier

|

The unit works great and has been reliable this winter. I was able to purchase on sale making it a more attractive buy. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the higher list price compared to similar models. This unit replace a similar model that failed after one season of operation.

Digital controller goes bad, reccomend DO NOT BUY

|

Take heed of the other negative reviews. I took the gable and I lost. The unit worked from Feb to April, 2014. Went to use it December of 2014 and it displayed "F" when it was full of water. Second problem was the fan control is now not functioning. New policy will not let you return the unit within the one year warranty period. After 60 days it must be repaired.

Kenmore humidifier

The 12 gallon on the box doesn't mean it's a 12 gallon just it's a 12 gallon output. Misleading but works good.

Great Humidifier

|

Extremely easy to set-up and use. Easy to read display and simple control buttons for humidity level and fan speeds including Auto set. Quiet setting for light sleepers. Filter easy to change. Need to use bathtub or very large sink to re-fill water container.

humidifier

|

I researched lots of humidifiers and decided I liked what I read. When the fan is on low, it isn't too loud. I wish there was a way to tell if I had put 12 gallons of water in each time. I found out today I had enough water in there and did not need the full 24 gallons. The humidifier just retained the extra water and as needed you heard it deposit into the machine.

Works great - easy to use

|

This humidifier is perfect for any area with electronics. With ultrasonic humidifiers you have to be careful of "white dust" and this one is evaporative so white dust is not a problem. Brought a 650 sq ft room from below 20% humidity to 38% humidity in 1 hour! Very simple to program and works great.

does the job well

|

We are quite pleased with this. It:
is easy to move and manage
runs quietly enough after getting humidity level up to or near desired
level
meets the need of a 1,400 square foot ranch.

But, don't try to de-mineralize or wash the filter - it's made of paper and will break apart easily if handled too much

Better than others I have had. Would recommend to others.

Worked well but seems like I'm always filling the tank. We had another whole house humidifier but it constantly leaked. We haven't had any problems with leaking with this one.

Disappointed

|

Have hot water heat, unit worked well until the temps. got down around 15F or lower, unit runs constantly on high speed and can only get the humidity level up to 20-21 and I replaced the wick last week. If you have dry heat as I do, look for another style of humidifier maybe a wheel type or ultra sonic.
