Great at first...

MN winters are long, cold and dry. I live in a 1950 brick building with updated forced air but no humidity feature. My condo is single level, 1100 sq ft - easy to humidify. Purchased last March I used the unit for 6 weeks, cleaned it and put it away. I took it out in Oct this year. Initially, I could run it on low and maintain 35% level. In December, it wasn't reaching 25% so I replaced the filter. Side note: it has never given me the "check filter" warning, even when my filter was dried out/discolored. I have hard, unfiltered city water and use the Sears Bacteriostat a few times per week, filling the unit twice/day. After two weeks the replacement filter was only 1/3 wet, and discolored so i replaced it again. It seems to be working better now. I love the machine - when it works. It is quiet, efficient, easy to fill from my kitchen faucet, and easy to clean in my bath tub (I wipe it out with a sponge maybe once/month). If the unit/new filter don't return to normal, I'll take it back to Sears for repair. The instruction manual notes a Sears one-year warranty and they will repair for free. This may seem tedious, but as I mentioned...MN winters are long, cold and dry!

Very disappointed with the quality construction and design

I have had 3 humidifiers prior to this one from Kenmore and have been super happy with them. Almost cried when the last one died out out wear. This new 12gallons is deceiving, it's the output not volume capacity to hold water. The construction is very poor, the plastic wellds for the water tank are very rough, not even and the tank is kind of cocked. The water tank fill up is on the side and makes it almost impossible to fill up unless you fill it in your tub or have a big bathroom sink. As the water level goes down and the resevoir tank releases water, it sounds like a toilet being flushed and will wake you up in the middle of the night 5-6 times depending on fan velocity. I could careless about the inaccurate humidity digital reader, but I do care that the fan speed 2 died after 2 weeks. I am not returning it, because I threw out the box and I'm not carrying this mini R2D2 back to the store. I am upset and disappointed with the construction quality and very poor design. I am a big fan of Kenmore appliances, but this one takes the cake for the worst appliance I have ever bought from Sears.

Kenmore humidifier

The 12 gallon on the box doesn't mean it's a 12 gallon just it's a 12 gallon output. Misleading but works good.

Great Humidifier

Extremely easy to set-up and use. Easy to read display and simple control buttons for humidity level and fan speeds including Auto set. Quiet setting for light sleepers. Filter easy to change. Need to use bathtub or very large sink to re-fill water container.

I researched lots of humidifiers and decided I liked what I read. When the fan is on low, it isn't too loud. I wish there was a way to tell if I had put 12 gallons of water in each time. I found out today I had enough water in there and did not need the full 24 gallons. The humidifier just retained the extra water and as needed you heard it deposit into the machine.

Works great - easy to use

This humidifier is perfect for any area with electronics. With ultrasonic humidifiers you have to be careful of "white dust" and this one is evaporative so white dust is not a problem. Brought a 650 sq ft room from below 20% humidity to 38% humidity in 1 hour! Very simple to program and works great.

does the job well

We are quite pleased with this. It:
is easy to move and manage
runs quietly enough after getting humidity level up to or near desired
meets the need of a 1,400 square foot ranch.

But, don't try to de-mineralize or wash the filter - it's made of paper and will break apart easily if handled too much

Better than others I have had. Would recommend to others.

Worked well but seems like I'm always filling the tank. We had another whole house humidifier but it constantly leaked. We haven't had any problems with leaking with this one.

Have hot water heat, unit worked well until the temps. got down around 15F or lower, unit runs constantly on high speed and can only get the humidity level up to 20-21 and I replaced the wick last week. If you have dry heat as I do, look for another style of humidifier maybe a wheel type or ultra sonic.

It Just Works

Can't write much of a review with only 3000 characters, right? See ******. Allowed more space there. Basically, Kenmores are a bunch of junk, along with everything else made in China these days. This is no different, but it works. If yours doesn't work, then take it back. Get another and repeat if necessary. Mine works, and I'm happy. I bought it at local Sears just so that I could return it if necessary. Luckily, no issues as of yet. My bedroom has high ceilings and a 1 gallon Vicks humidifier doesn't do anything. This, on the otherhand, has enough capacity to burn through two gallons a night and maintain 40%+, even with a space heater running.. On the weekends, I'll run it down the hallway on F4 all day, burning through 6 gallons/day and maintaining 30%-40% depending upon how long my central heat runs. Prior to using this, my house has averaged 16%-25%, especially with the "polar vortexes" driving the temps really low and the long run time of the central heat. I have a very large house, but this does a good job. I can get most of the house up to 35% after running this for a few hours and up to 40% if running this all day on high. The areas near this can maintain 40% on low. The downstairs slowly get up to where I need it and maintains as long as this is on high. But then, my house is larger than what this is rated for. I have moderately hard water and using tap water along with the oldon Solution Combination Water Treatment and Bacteriostatic #246 works well. Just a few capfuls per tank, which holds two gallons. In fact, the base holds two gallons also. I have had no leaks. The pad stays moist. It has remained clean for the two weeks that I've owned it. Today, I let it dry out so that I could wipe (wipe, not scrub) the little dirt from the base. I'll likely run the filter in the dishwasher with two cups of white vinegar in a week or two. The water treatment doesn't smell, and keeps mold from growing in the filter. If you've ever owned a swamp cooler, you know those things stink after a while. Not this. Just use the additive and replace the filter if it gets gross (1-2 months). Yes, it's flimsy, so be careful if moving it. The fan part sits on the base in these little tracks. Failure to line it up can result in leaks. The tank leans on it. So if pushing on carpet, you might want to be careful and let most of your water evaporate before you even try it. I've had it on carpet for two weeks with no issues. F1 is fairly quiet. If you are very sensitive to noise in your bedroom, then move it into your bathroom or at least 10 feet away. I had a cold, and this was great at adding cool moisture to help me sleep. The auto feature to turn fan on/off is great. Ability to use tap water, large capacity, ability to work in very large rooms all are pros. Wimpy construction is a minor negative, but as long as you don't man-handle it, you shouldn't have any issues.

Bought this today and the electronic control doesn't work. As others have noted, it continues to flash F indicating it needs to be filled although it is full. The fan settings are unresponsive. Going back as soon as I have time. Very disappointed.

Works great. No more static electricity from the carpets, placing the humidifier near the cold air duct in the middle of the home. You must refill the resovoir once per day.

So far not to good

When it is running this thing works great, but to often it shuts down and has to be restarted. Also it wont let me change the fan on it. I need to get in touch with Sears andsend this thing back. It just isnt working right. Should have listened to the other reviews before purchasing!

so far so good

Pros: good output, small enough not to be a complete eyesore, easy to fill Cons: flimsy, requires frequent filling Hints: the output is greater if you flip over your filter often ( I do it daily) and change it every 3 weeks. The cover sometimes does not fit over the activation stick located in the bottom section so i tape the lever in the underside of the top section so it is always on. Better than the console which is a huge eyesore and bulky

Humidistat not working properly

I have owned the 8-gallon version of this humidifier for about 3 years(very happy with it) and decided to purchase this larger capacity one to better increase the humidity levels in my home. Straight out of the box this unit's humidistat read 23% humidity whereas my 8 gal and standalone humidistats read 41% - all located within a couple of feet of each other to minimize variances. 24 hours later the humidistat is still giving a reading that is way off. I will exchange this unit and report back on whether the next humidifier will have the same problem. (later) I exchanged the 8-gallon humidifier for another and this one also is misreading the humidity levels but seems to be consistent at about 20% below actual humidity, so I can work with this even though its humidistat is not properly calibrated.

Control operation

I liked the looks and the way this unit was suppose to work. Simple right? When I put water in and turned it on, the F was flashing and I could not adjust the fan speed. I read the manual and there wasn't anything in the trouble shooting guide to fix this. I thought to myself that there must be a reset somewhere. I couldn't find one. By chance while the unit was running, I pushed the off button in and held it in for a few seconds. Then a CL appeared on the digital read out. I released the button and then tried the fan button and it worked. All 4 speeds and the A option for automatic. Why isn't this listed in the trouble shooting guide? Maybe I just got lucky!

Good for now

Purchased based on nothing more than size of unit, square foot ability and of course price. WOW I must be living right cause this things works quite well and I don't see why all the negative remarks. Easy to fill tank, quiet and humidifies the air to my liking. Brought the house, here in central IL, up to 39 % from 22% humidity in less than a day, so I'm OK with that. Thought it would wake me up in the night buy NO, it did not and I slept very well. For the reviewer that said the gurgling sounds like a toilet flushing, I wish my toilets were that quiet. My wife and I are not scratching our dry skin, having dry throat etc. The first day this thing only went through about 4gallons of water in nearly 24 hours.....very cool and very surprised. You go Kenmore! And my carpet is dry, so no, it's not leaking. I do admit that the construction details are not that well finished but come on, we're not driving the thing around town showing it off......oooooo look at my new humidifier! :-) To be realistic I don't expect this thing to last for years and years, but if it does all the better. I have it sitting under a cold air return so when the forced air heat comes on it's spreading the wealth so to speak. I like it, so I'm keeping it.
