I am satisfied, so happy to skip the public laundromat

If you are bying this on-line, just keep in mind that portable means compact. I bought this dryer because the apartment  where I live only has 120V outlets, and 98% of dryers requirea 240v power outlet that uses up allot more energy. So I already knew it would take longer tot dry the clothes , and it does , it usually has to run for 60 to 75 minutes to get the clothes as dry as I like. Plus you can only can a small batch  at a time, so whenever I do 1 load in the washer machine I have to split it into 2 loads in this dryer, but when you are doing  your laundry at HOME, whats another hours anyways, in my case was either this dryer or going to the public laundry-room,  and so I am happy as a kid.  Even if I have to spend 4 hours doing my laundry at home, its worth because after all I'm home. Just make sure you have a spot near a window because you will need to purchase an aluminum flexible dryer duct /exhaust, so the hot air can directed outside your home, otherwise you will have dust/ lint flowing around in your house and thats not healthy. overall I am very happy with this dryer , but as with all things new you must get  used  it.

Bad Design

I was surprised by the other reviews on this dryer. I had quite a different experience. Bought this with the 2.1 cu ft portable washer (see my review on that one) and was just as surprised with the poor quality of the washer, with respect to other reviews. One load of clothes took EXTREMELY long to dry, probably one and a half hours or more. I'm a techy, so I knew that a 120v machine won't be as fast or as warm as a 240v machine, but this machine did not even get warm when running (it got a little warm when the clothes were dry.) My wife kept asking me if I was sure the heat was on. I think the main problem with this machine is the bad aero-dynamic design. The heated air comes into the tumbler from the rear on the left and goes out the rear of the tumbler on right, so the heated air simply bypasses the bulk of the clothes before exiting the machine. This is very inefficient, and most of the dry heat was probably lost to the outdoors through my exhaust vent. Very light loads may not be effected by this problem as much, since the incoming warmed air has less obstacles causing it to "shortcut" past the clothes to the exhaust port. Another problem is that the exit port is also the lint clean-out, so you have to reach inside to the rear of the tumbler and pull it out, snap it apart, clean the lint inside it, snap it back together, and blindly fit it back into the rear of the tumbler. Well, not blindly, if you want to stick your head inside the tumbler to see what you are doing. I might add that, inside the tumbler, when it was not running for a short while, mine gave off a pretty strong "fish-oil" paint reek (if you've ever worked with rustoleum metal paint, you know what I mean.) This might have gone away with time, and did not seem to make the clothes smell likewise. We finally returned it with the washer, and the Sears Manager and the Salespeople were very nice and sympathic to my disappointment with both machines. The manager met me halfway on some of my loss. Sears has the best customer service.

Decent portable, small wheels

Rated the portable washer the same. The dryer has very small wheels. Its worth taking a wheel out and getting a larger one if this dryer has to be rolled much. For the price a decent size caster should be on these. They screw in, just watch the length of the new screw on a new caster, both for the dryer and Especially the washer.

Yes, I'd buy another...

I'm on my third one...  I purchased my first one in the early 90's, then sold it when I moved.   I used my second one for six years.  (I'm sure it would have lasted much longer, but when I needed a new part, I opted to replace the whole thing.)   I replaced that one in 2008 and it's still going strong today.  I dry about 5 loads a week and give it no special care at all, other than making sure the filter is cleaned after each load.  It's very hard working, dependable and reliable.  I would not hesitate to buy another.    By: H.F. terrific dryer

This is a terrific dryer. At 3 and a half cubic feet it may sound like it's small, but it handles sizeable loads very efficiently, quietly, and quickly. It's great to be freed of having to run to the building laundry room a couple of times for each dryer load. If we were able to put portable washers in our apartments (in my building we're not) I'd buy the portable washer to go with it without hesitation.

The Kenmore portable drier is efficient and reliable.

We have owned Kenmore washers and driers for more than 40 years and have been more than satified with their performance. The new drier is all that we expected. Our new portable washer does not measure up with past Kenmore compact portable washers. I believe it is the computerized aspect of its operation. It did not work at all when we brought it home. The service that was provided under the warranty was exceptional but the operation of the washer will take some getting used to. The drier is, as usual, efficient and reliable.

Fine Product

For those who are frustrated with longer drying times when using a portable dryer, please keep in mind that this is not a standard dryer, like the ones that you are used to.  A portable dryer runs on half the voltage of a regular dryer.  Because of this, it is going to take much longer to dry your clothes.  The reason for this is that in a regular dryer, 120 volts go to spinning the drum, and 120 volts go to powering the heating element.  In a portable, only 55-60 volts go to each.  No other portable dryer is going to dry your clothes any faster.  I have a portable Kenmore dryer from the 80's, and while it does take it a bit longer to dry compared to a regular dryer, it works just fine.  I'd rather wait twice the time for dry clothes (and plan accordingly) than have to sit in a laundromat.  The other alternative is for you to pay out of your own pocket for washer and dryer hookups (a dubious proposition).  While I don't have this particular Kenmore portable, the Kenmore portable that I do have which is over 20 years old still works amazingly.  Sears makes great products.

2 stars

At first I purchased the stackable front load unit. They were extremely too big to fit in my house so I had to arrange for the delieverly guys to come back and pick them up, and not to mention the sales lady who sold me the unit had to arrange for a plumber to come out and install the unit. She completely forgot that I said that I lived in an apartment, she was just trying to make a sale and earn her commision. Then I chose the portable unit. This was a lot smaller than the other and I did the hook up myself, the directions were very understandable. So, needless to say the washer works very well but on the other hand, the dryer is terrible. I guess I expected more. It doesn't get that hot at all! You have to dry your clothes more than once. I used it today (9-24-08) for the first time. I've washed all my clothing and only on the second load of drying. This is ridiculous, I still have at least 4 more loads to dry and the second load is still in the dryer. So I would not reommend this product to NO ONE!!

110 Volt Dryer

Our little 110 vot dryer passed on and we could not obtain parts as it was so old. We looked for weeks on line and was supprised to find SEARS had what we wanted and at such a low price. NO ONE came close to Sears price.Yes the 110 volt dryers due take a little longer to dry. This one works great. I would recommend this to anyone who does not want to walk up and down basement steeps or lives in an appartment or trailer.Space is no problem if you get the stack unit, be sure and follow the stack instructions to the letter for instalation. We use the indoor vent on this and just love it.

Good product, bad customer service and delivery

I recently purchased the portable washer and dryer with stacking stand for my apartment. After waiting two weeks for delivery, the washer and dryer arrived without all the pieces to the stacking stand. The delivery guys called customer service who arranged to send out a tech the following week after ordering a new stand. When they returned the next week, they had the stand but not the hardward to put it together. Again, the delivery guys called customer service who is now ordering the hardware for the stand which is going to take another 7 to 10 days to be delivered to me and then I have to call to set up a third appointment. Neither the customer service agents or the delivery guys are familiar with the products they sold me. Too bad, the washer and dryer are good products but I'm seriously considering returning the whole mess as I don't have the space to have the appliances sitting side by side for 3 or 4 weeks. I was surprised after reading all the great customer service reviews at how bad they were. The delivery guys were nice and did what they could. One of them arranged to get me a $50 gift card for my inconvenience. I can tell you, I would have rather had them do what they promised to begin with. I would not order a product for delivery from Sears again. I would have rated my purchase a 5 if all had gone well because I like the product but the most I can give the overall experience is a 3.

Mine is 11 (Yes ELEVEN)

Came to this website to look for a new vent hose and basket for mine-the original one is finally wearing out! Bought my unit along with a portable washer in OCTOBER 1996 and both are still going strong. Since I am a single guy I obviously don't usa it as much as a family, but how many appliances last over a decade these days???!!!!

Quality not lacking

Have been using this model for approximately 6 months with good results. I have read the other reviews, and agree in most that it does take a little bit longer to dry things. But in defense of this drier, for a 120 vac model, one should not expect laundromat drying speed! For being a compact unit, it works well. I would recommend this unit to anyone that 1) Does not have or want to install 220 vac service (which is VERY costly), and 2) does not mind waiting for their clothes to dry. If this drier last as long as my other Kenmore drier did, I will be a happy camper!!!

My thought

I have to disagree with SensitiveGuy from Ashland, Oregon review about this dryer on April 30, 2007I just bought one today and finally got my clothes washed and dried. This dryer exceeded my expectation, it dry about 30 underwear in about one hour. Same load in laundromat takes 40 mins.I am happy with this dryer performance since it is only 120V and portable. I give it a 5 stars for performance.I hate the door, I have to push hard to close the door. I would have give a 5 stars for Kenmore quality, because of the door, I minus one stars.4 stars for quality.By the way, I put a sox behind the vent.

Good for the Money!

I bought this dryer to go with the portable washer and to be used in an appartment without washer/dryer hook ups. It works well for all the laundry my family of 5 can produce. Yes, it takes longer to dry than a regular dryer, but it works great! I can wash 2 loads while I wait for the 1st load to get dry. Heavier items take longer, so I wash and dry our light items first. I found that using the timed dry rather than the Auto Dry works better. The air is hotter and the clothes dry faster.

Great little dryer

I live in an apartment and do not have a 220V connection for a proper sized washer /dryer units. So I bought a portable washer and dryer for a family of 3. I am able to keep up with the laundry with these units. (Both Kenmore ;) It is only 110V so I expect it too take longer. What I do for heavy items like towels is let them air dry for a bit before using the dryer. It takes up a small corner in my room and is actually beneficial to keeping it warm and moisture levels up. Especially in the dry cold winter up north. It is pretty quiet and easy to move. I say I am very pleased with this product effectiveness. It sure beats using an over priced laundermat. I figured with cost analysis it will pay for itself within the year.
