When it works...

This will be our replacement (extended warrantee) for a Kenmore from 2003. We love the machine when it works. However, I would not purchase this product again for the price that they ask. We have gone thru 3 in 10 years with the original price around $700. I would certainly not purchase it without an extended warrantee. A working model makes a great quality of ice, but more than one week a year we are waiting for repair appointments and parts. The compressors seem to be a weak link. This time, the plastic molding around the drain cracked and is integrated in the whole cabinet. It's also not a very good selling point, Sears, when your 2nd picture on the website of this product shows a fluid leak from the bottom...

Kenmore Built-In 51 lb. capacity Icemaker is A PIECE OF JUNK!!

My same model icemaker of 7 years had a part go out in which Sears did not make anymore. My neighbor, who had bought the same icemaker 6 months after me had the exact same thing happen within month. Pretty cheesy that Sears quit making the part after they gave this model a new design. The new design causes the icemaker to dump all of the water in the resevoir after making one sheet of ice, therefore wasting the equivilent of about 5 more sheets of ice. My neighbor also replaced hers with the same model like I did and within a month of so of buying them, both icemakers displayed that they needed cleaning. The icemaker cleaner that you buy on line from Sears is $35.00 (on ******, it is $12.95). The cleaning button never came on the entire time either of us owned our former one. I would think I had gotten a lemon, but ironically, my neighbor is experiencing the same problems within the exact time frame that I am. The new and improved design has ruined a good product. I wish I had bought another brand, this one is junk. (the repairman says Whirlpool & Kitchen Aid all have the same new design)

Kenmore Icemaker Model 8958 is keeping us cool!

We purchased this icemaker for the nurse's office in our small elementary school. The machine has a pump which requires a outgoing drainage line, which wasn't clear to us from the product description. Our previous icemaker drained into a pan on the bottom. This made it a bit more difficult to install but it's nice not having to worry about the draining. The nurse and the students are very happy to have very small, square cubes which are better for ice packs that big, refrigerator cubes. And the school staff loves it, too. The cube size was a surprise as I couldn't find a picture of the cubes or description on the specifications. The machine makes lots of ice and keeps it frozen. In fact, ice sometimes falls out when we open the door although the level may be adjustable. I haven't looked into that yet. I wish it had a place for the scoop so we wouldn't have to dig for it first thing every morning.

I ordered this machine online and Sears wouldn't let me pay for installation, saying it was free with delivery. However, when the machine arrived late one Friday afternoon, the delivery men tried to drop it and go. I had to confront them but they eventually "found" some parts in their truck and installed it. I don't know what that was about but I'm glad I was here when it was delivered instead of another staff person.

51 Capacity Built In Icemaker

I love the Built In Icemaker. It replaced a trash compactor that had not worked for a long time. The ice cubes are much smaller than the ice cubes in my refrigerator icemaker. They are a perfect size and very convenient.

The biggest problem that we had was we ordered the Icemaker online. There was a special that installation was included if you paid for the shipping. We paid extra for shipping to have it installed on a Saturday. But the icemaker was delivered on a Saturday, but the delivery person said that we would have to set up the installation with Sears. They were very cooperative, and refunded the extra money that was paid for the Saturday installation. When the installation person came to the house, he said that he was not authorized to do any plumbing and therefore, he only set the icemaker into the hole where it was to be used. We then had to pay a plumber to come to the house and plumb the pipe from the sink to the icemaker. It would have been helpful if there had been instructions online when it was ordered that the area would have to be plumbed before it was installed. (I thought that the installation should have included the plumbing, that would make sense to me.) Also, I understand that any appliance that is installed should not be taxed and we were taxed for the appliance.

Everyone that I spoke with was very cooperative and I will shop Sears again, but they need to have better information about their products.

Wish I had ice

We purchased this icemaker about 3 years ago. When it is working, it is wonderful. However, the twice ice feature has never worked. We purchased the extended warranty, thankfully, because we have had it repaired several times. This latest episode, they replaced the pump to no avail. We are now waiting on a new compressor and evaporator that cost more than we paid for the product. When I called Sears to inquire about something so ridiculous, their response was that's just their policy. This latest repair, parts and labor would have cost me $1,400.00 and we only paid approximately $950.00, 3 years ago.
