Minimum clearances for closet installation
by Manage My Life
May 5th, 2012

The side vent will mean the extra 4 inches in the back of the dryer will need to be on the side of the dryer where the side vent will be. The dryer will need an inch in the back at least and maybe more for the gas connection. You should pick up and two or three inches in the back by moving the vent to the side. Unless the door has vents it will need to remain open for proper airflow. The 4 inch side clearance will most likely be closer to 4 1/2-5 inches to leave a litttle wiggle room if there is any. Do you have the extra side to side room to handle the extra 4-5 inches for the side vent.?

Measurements for installation of a washer and dryer in a closet.

So, looks like our space is 3/4 inches too shallow.

This is now frustrating because when I asked the Sears sales person about this and even showed her in the manual that the washer is supposed to have 4 inches clearance, she said that in her 20 years of experience she has never heard of this. She said the machine will fit with room to spare.

I'm pretty much at a standstill now because I really want this machine but can't take the chance on my land lord removing our existing machine and then the Sears crew showing up and not being able to fit the new machine, then having to cancel and have our land lord put our old washer back in.

Do I believe the manual or the salesperson with all her experience??? Our water faucets are recessed in the wall so they don't stick out, but from what you're saying the drain hose is what needs the 4 inches. The salesperson said hardly any space is needed.

Side by Side refrigerator door closet

Thank you for your question. I can understand your concern about the door. Unfortunately, without the model number, I will not be able to provide specific information. However, the cams are usually replaceable, both the upper and lower cams. With some models, the complete hinge and both cams will come together in a kit. If you would like more assistance, reply to this thread and please include the complete model and serial number and I will be glad to assist you further.

Where should the light in a closet be placed?
by Manage My Life
April 26th, 2007
Manage My Life
It doesn't make sense to put a light in a closet immediately above a shelf, where things will likely be stored around the light. This can be a fire hazard, and there is a danger of breaking the light and injuring someone with the broken glass. Closet lights should be mounted on the ceiling away from the shelf, or on the wall above the door. In some jurisdictions, bare bulbs are not permitted and the lights must be in fixtures. Cages around the bulbs are not acceptable in some areas. Check your local rules.

How can I see better in my closet?

If you don't want to bring in an electrician, go to a home store that has battery-operated lights you can stick with adhesive inside the closet.

Can I put a Kenmore 9 freezer in a closet?

Check the installation instructions in the owner's manual first. From you're description it sounds like it should have adequate clearance. A problem could come, from the heat of the dryer and water heater. It's possible an add on fan kit would be needed. This is a kit designed to help keep the compressor from overheating. It can be installed on some models. You will be charged for this kit, if it's needed. If you need more assistance, you can resubmit your question with more details and please include a complete model number.

Dampen sound of water in drain line in closet
by Manage My Life

There are dozens of pipe wrapping products on the market. The goal would be to make sure that the product has some sound proofing capability rather than just a temperature guarantee. I noted various products for you below. Simply using a pipe wrap may not be as effective in reducing the sound of draining water as insulating the pipe and then framing a wall around it. If the pipe is in the corner of the closet, simply completing 2 more sides using 2x4s and either plywood or drywall will give you the best insulation "box" with the most appeal to the eye. Be sure to leave an access panel for any drain clean-outs that are located in that closet space.
