Thank you Tim, It is a good thing to make sure all the voltage checks are good. At another website youtube with a range that might look a little different than yours but the fix is the same as yours will help. Here is the link. youtube.com/watch?v=3EZIT6KXncE If you have more questions reply to this post. Thank you for choosing Manage my Life.

Expandable Element replacement

Thank you for question. Before replacing the burner I recommend confirming the diagnosis first. We need to check the voltage on the surface unit switch to know if the switch or burner has failed. If you have 240volts out of the switch then we know that the burner has failed or the harness between the switch & burner is bad.

You will need to slide the range out a few inches to access the screws holding the control panel in place.

Disconnect power, roll the control panel forward to expose the switch terminals and reconnect power. 2. With a Voltmeter set for AC and a scale higher than 240 Volts measure the voltage drop between terminals P1 and P2. If the meter reads zero the wiring between the main terminal block on the range and the switch is open. If the meter reads line to line voltage (around 240 VAC) go to step 3. 3. With the switch turned clockwise to the HI position, measure the voltage drop between terminals 2 and 4. If the meter reads zero the switch is defective. If the meter reads line to line voltage measure the voltage drop between terminals 2 and 4A. If the meter reads line to line voltage the switch is good. Go to step 4. 4. Raise the main top and locate the two terminals on the element with the wires from terminals 2 and 4 are connected. Measure the voltage drop between these two terminals. If the meter reads zero the wires between the switch and the elements are open. If the meter reads line to line voltage the element is defective.

kenmore elite range - large expandable element not working
by Manage My Life

Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

There is several components involved in the operation of the large expandable radiant burner which could one of them is likely faulty. It would be unusual for all three to fail. If it's just the large one that fails to come on, the most likely failure is the surface unit control board. I strongly suggest calling a service technician with the proper tools and equipment to properly diagnose and repair your range.

There is a touch panel, user interface control board, surface unit control board and the radiant surface burners. The failure could be either one of the above mentioned components. I highly suggest calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your range. I added an image below of the wiring diagram to reference and for the technician if needed.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link:

Why is my Kenmore stove expandable burner not working?

From what you are describing the contacts in the element sensor are stuck together, this is the reason why the hot surface light is on all the time & the element is not working. The sensor also controls the power to the element.

For this model, the element & sensor come together when you order the element. I would recommend you have the element/sensor replaced.

You probably need mortar, not grout, for this application. Specifically firebrick mortar or refractory mortar. This is made for high temperature applications.

The expandable element/sensor is not working. What is the part number and how much does it cost?

I am assuming you mean the sensor that mounts across the top of the 6/9 inch element on the top of the range. To replace this sensor you have to replace the element.

The part number of the element is 318198923 and the cost is around $90.00.

This type of failure will normally need to be diagnosed and repaired by a service technician. You could have a bad element, a wiring failure or a bad burner switch that is preventing that right front burner from heating. The components are not easy to access. That is why I recommend that you have a service technician repair this failure. Here is a link for the Sears Service website:

Sears Home Services

.

If you want to fix this problem yourself, you can

shut off the house circuit breaker for the range to disconnect electrical power

and access the burner switch in the console. You will need to lift the glass top off of the range and access that switch from the back. You can use the wiring diagram shown below to check the continuity through that switch. This may help you determine the cause of your failure. If the switch is working properly, you can check the wiring connections between that switch and the element. If you find no problems with the wiring, then you will probably need to replace that element.

You can order parts from the

Sears PartsDirect

website.

Be sure that you

shut off the house circuit breaker to disconnect power from the range

before accessing and replacing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.
