Why is my Frigidaire washer not agitating?
by Manage My Life

The plastic agitator is not cracked or stripped. The metal gear that interfaces with the plastic agitator looks okay but does not turn when the timer is calling for agitation. When the machine if off, I can turn this metal gear at the top of the drive shaft easily in both directions like it is not connected to the transmission. Any ideas?

Why is my Frigidaire washer not agitating?

From what you are describing it sounds like the agitator is stripped out. Usually this will happen to the auger section of this type agitator only. (This is the upper section of the agitator that pushes or pulls the clothes down into the main part of the agitator.) This motion is what causes the clothes to circulate through the water.

If this is the problem, the complete agitator will have to be replaced along with the cap.

The cap has an o-ring that prevents water from getting down inside the agitator gears. If this is not the problem please resubmit your question with more specific details.

Thank you very much sir. There is no noise emitting from the washer during the agitation cycle. I will give that a shot. Thanks again.

Thanks for the information about your washer not agitating, sorry you are having this problem.

It would be very helpful to have more detailed information as well as the model number off the washer so I could pull data on your exact model.

I would need to know if the washer fills with water and stops? Or does it fill and make some sounds but the agitator just does not oscillate? Does the washer perform any other functions, like spin and drain?

The cause of no agitating can be anything from a motor, timer, or wiring connections to mechanical issues like the transmission or just the agitator itself.

Please reply with as much detailed descriptions as possible and the complete model number off the washer and I will be happy to respond.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link:

Hi,

Thanks for contacting

ManageMyLife

. I understand how frustrating it is having trouble with your appliance not working.

If the agitator is not moving, does the washer fill and does it drain the water out of the tub?  If it performs the fill and the drain, the motor is coming on and I would say you have a problem with the motor to transmission coupler.

NOTE:  Always unplug or de-energize electrical equipment before removing covers or attempting service.

Be careful and wear appropriate hand protection when working around sharp metal parts.

The coupler can be changed by moving the washer out from the wall and with the power cord removed from the wall, tip the washer back and allow it to rest on the wall.  This will expose the pump and the motor.  Remove the pump hold down clamps with a screw driver and move it out of your way.  Next remove the bolt and the clamp while supporting the motor.  Slide the motor off the motor mount bracket and this will expose the coupler.  Remove the coupler from the transmission shaft and the motor shafts.  To install you will need to align the coupler holes up and make sure the motor isolation feet are installed on the motor.  Reassemble the motor to the bracket and put the pump back on.

Please feel free to let me know if you need further assistance. We are always here to help.

Thank you for using ManageMyLife.com.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for submitting a question to Manage My Life.

I do not have enough details in order to say what is causing the motor to stop and restart after a minute or so later. You did not indicate how it operates when you change the Agitate/Spin to a different setting.

You could be experiencing a motor failure, timer failure or a loose wire connection. The diagnosis of this issue will require the use of an ohm/volt meter and you will have to perform ohm checks and/or live voltage checks. If you have an ohm/volt meter and are confident in your technical abilities, please reply below and I will be happy to assist you further. I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose and repair your washer.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website:

Thank you for your question.  I am sorry for the problem with your

Kenmore 110.24872300 Top Load washer

.

Even though the lid switch strike/pin  is engaging the switch I suspect the switch is bad.  On this particular washer if the lid switch is bad the motor will not run at all.  In previous washers the a broken lid switch would prevent a drain and spin but would all the washer to agitate.  I would suggest you start by checking the

lid switch

.  The lid switch can be accessed by removing the cabinet.  Remove the endcaps and screws holding the console down.  Flip up the console and remove the two heacy chrome clips holding the cabinet.  If you try the do-it-yourself method please remember to unplug the dryer first.  You can also have the problem repaired in your home by a Sears technician.  Here is the link:

Thank you for your question.

I am sorry you are having a problem with your washer. Without a model number, I am not sure what washer you have. I will give you information on our most common washer. I suspect the problem with the washer is a broken motor coupler. The coupler links the motor to the transmission instead of using a belt. When the coupler breaks, the washer will not agitate or spin and often will make an unusual noise. To verify the problem, I recommend starting the washer in a wash cycle. After the washer fills, check to see if the washer is agitating. If it is not, the motor coupler is likely the cause. The part number for the coupler is 285753A and can be ordered from our website

Sears Parts Direct

.

I have found a video that will give you more confidence in repairing the washer yourself. Please click here to watch the

Hi,

Thank you for your question. It is concerning when your appliance is not functioning correctly.

The part where the washer is shutting off is when the motor reverses to go into spin. The lid lock needs to be locked and the white red wire to the white wire needs to be made for it to go into spin cycle.

See Picture

I hope this is helpful. If I may be of further assistance please include more details in a reply to this entry below.

Here is a video that shows how to access that tub seal in this type of washer:

Washing Machine Tub Seal Replacement

. You can examine that seal and the outer tub so see if you can determine the cause of your leak. If that tub seal is leaking, you can replace it using the procedure shown in that video. The part number for the tub seal is 373727. You can order that part from the

Sears PartsDirect

website.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.
