Thank you for contacting SearsPartsDirect.com with your question about your Kenmore Elite Washer. I am so sorry to hear the softener dispenser is not working. I know what a huge difference softener makes in the feel of the clothes. I will be happy to help you with.

Before you replace the valve, I recommend cleaning the inlet hose screens to see if they are clogged with debris from the water supply. For safety reasons, start by unplugging the washer from the outlet. Next you will want to move the washer far enough away from the wall so that you an work behind it. Be careful not to pull it out so far that you disconnect the inlet and drain hoses.

Turn off the water supply to the inlet valve. Next you will want to disconnect the inlet water hoses. I recommend having a towel on the floor and a bucket handy as some water will come out of the hoses when you disconnect them. Take the screen out of the water inlet hose. You may need needle-nose pliers to pull it out of the end of the hose. Brush out any dirt. If you see a calcified build up, you can remove that by soaking the screen in a solution of water and vinegar. I recommend you also remove the softener dispenser and clean out any debris in it and the connector hose. Disconnect the inlet water hoses from the wall and run water through them at the kitchen sink to see if there is debris inside the hose. If you are unable to dislodge a clog, replace the hose. (The hoses should be replaced every five years.) I have included the link for the inlet hoses for you.

Water Inlet Hoses

Reinsert the screens and the dispenser, then reverse the above process. If there was a lot of debris in the screen, then you likely have the same build up in the pump and the drain hose. To clean the machine I recommend you run it through a cycle with Affresh Washer Cleaner. (Do not put clothes in the washer during the cleaning cycle.) I have included the link for the cleaner for you.

If cleaning the screens and the dispenser do not resolve the issue, then the next step would be to replace the valve itself. I have included the link to order that also.

Usually on this model of washer the problem is going to be the dispenser water valve. The dispenser water valve is the device that provides fresh water to fill into the fabric softener dispenser & flush out the fabric softener during one of the cycles. If the water valve has gone bad this would cause the problem your having. You can pull the dispenser drawer completely out & take it over to the sink to clean it out & also fill the fabric dispenser section with water to see if it drains out correctly. If it does this would indicate a problem with the dispenser water valve. Be sure both the hot & cold water supply is turned on & working. Also be sure if you are using the real thick type fabric softener to dilute it with water first. If it is still giving you problems after making these checks I would recommend having the dispenser water valve replaced.

From what you are describing it sounds like the dispenser is clogged.

The dispenser drawer is removable for easy cleaning.

1. Unlock the dispenser drawer by pressing the Release Lever. Remove the drawer.

2. Remove the inserts (the siphon from the softener and bleach compartments).

3. Wash the parts under running water.

NOTE: Do not wash components in the dishwasher.

4. Replace the inserts and return the dispenser to the drawer.

If this does not resolve the issue I recommend calling a service technician to diagnose & repair.

I have provided you with the instruction on how to remove the dispenser. The dispenser can be cleaned by using hot water and bleach. Fabric softener is mostly wax based. It is best to dilute the softener with warm water to keep the dispenser clean.

From what your describing it sounds like the dispenser is not secured properly to the agitator or has an internal crack. I recommend replacing the fabric softener dispenser. See page 5 in the owner’s manual.

You mention diluted fabric softener in your question and there's no doubt the softener must be diluted to spin out of the dispenser in spin.

This is a fairly simple system to dispense the softener and there's not much that can go wrong but there are a couple of things to consider.

The softener must be diluted and you indicate it is.

The washer must spin fast enough to spin the softener out of the dispenser and from the description you give it is likely there is a spin problem.

You can check for a high speed spin during the cycle with a medium load. Some clutch/basket drive problem only so up with a load. The washer might spin empty or with a light load but not with a heavy load. A weak basket drive would lead to a weak spin and the softener would not be spun out.

This washer has a neutral drain and sometimes if there is a timer problem the washer will drain but not spin at all. This would leave the dispenser full of softener.

A little residue will always be left behind but the dispenser should be mostly empty after the cycle.

Before taking anything apart I'd suggest you try to monitor the spins in the cycles and see how they do with a load.

I hope this information gives you some ideas about what to look for but submit another question with any additional details with what you find for further assistance with this problem.
