Why does my Craftsman air compressor trip the breaker when it tries to start? It has a new switch.

My Craftsman 5.5 hp model 919.165090 labors to start and trips the breaker. I have installed a new pressure switch (second one). This happens every time. However after replacing the switch it did run one time without tripping the breaker.

Three things can cause the air compressor to trip a circuit breaker. If the compressor is running on an extension cord, move it and plug it directly in to a wall receptacle. An extension cord that lets the voltage drop can cause the compressor to trip the circuit breaker.

If the compressor only trips the circuit breaker after it has built pressure, the check valve might not be sealing off. This can cause it to trip a circuit breaker.

A bad capacitor or start switch on the motor can cause it to trip a circuit breaker.

A weak circuit breaker can cause the compressor to trip the circuit breaker.

Someone needs to check the voltage to the motor and the amp draw of the motor to determine where the problem is.
