Why does my VCR play sound but no picture?

Fuzz is the only thing on screen.

I read your symptom as being able to play a videotape, but the video does not show or is distorted. My guess is that the drum might be damaged or needed to be cleaned. The video heads are located in the big metal drum inside your TV and are separate from the audio head. If they've become very dirty or not operating correctly it can give you a no picture with audio condition. You can try a head cleaning tape but they can be ineffective because they apply no pressure to the dirt stuck on the components. If you are really partial to this TV, I would find a local repair shop that has a cheap cleaning charge. There they will be able to tell you if you need a component change (this will be difficult since part availability might be scarce).
