What would cause my lawn mower to not start and act like it's firing early and jerking the starter rope out of my hand?

Craftsman self propelled mower, model no. 917-376460. Lawn mower won't start. Seems to be firing early and yanks cord out of my hand. Cleaned and reset plug gap. What should I check next?

Based on your symptom the flywheel key is sheared which will cause the ignition timing to be off. You will need to remove the engine flywheel and replace the flywheel key. The flywheel key is part #222698S. I recommend checking the blade too. The flywheel key is normally sheared from hitting a hard object with the mower blade. The blade could also be bent. The flywheel key can be ordered and shipped directly to you from
