what causes the bellows on my kenmore washer to be ripped

i have a kenmore washer 11045981400 and noticed that it was leaking. also the 3 types of rinse options were on (skincare rinse, 2nd rinse, normal rinse), thus there was a high-pitched buzzing. upon closer inspection we noticed that the rubber rim (bellows) was ripped. we know we need to replace it but i have to know what could have caused the rip - i want to prevent it from happening. is it normal wear and tear? we bought the washer in may 2005. please advise, thanks!!!

The bellows do get a lot of wear during the normal course of being used but ripped seems past normal wear.

I suspect the rip was caused by something (zipper) aggressively rubbing against the boot. This can be just an isolated one time deal or it can be from overloading the washer.

It might also be that some piece of clothing was caught in the door when it was closed.

This is more likely since if you were overloading the washer the problem would have happened earlier in the 5 years you've had the washer.

There is no history of the bellows failing often.

Be sure not to overload or close the door on any items.

You can feel confident with changing the bellows it will last a while but the bellow does get the most wear of any part on the washer.
