If the dryer is shutting off and not continuing to run after 5 - 10 seconds then you could have a problem with the motor or a friction problem in the drive system. See if the motor will start back up immediately. If the motor will not start back up right away but will start again after the motor cools down, then it is likely overheating. Check for excessive friction in the drive system. With the drum empty and the dryer off, open the door and manually spin the drum counterclockwise. You should detect reasonable resistance since the belt is on the motor pulley and idler pulley. If you detect excessive friction, you can

unplug the dryer

and shut off the gas supply. Open the cabinet using the procedure shown in the first image below to check the internal components for the cause of the friction.

If you detect no excessive friction, I recommend that you

unplug the dryer

and check the motor for excessive lint build-up that could be causing it to overheat. You may be able to fix this problem by thoroughly cleaning lint build-up out of the cabinet especially in the motor area. If the motor still overheats and shuts off, then you will probably need to replace the motor.

If the dryer continues to run but the burner just shuts off after 5 - 10 seconds then you likely have a problem with the gas valve coils. James R. provided a link for a previous answer in the above response. That previous answer describes the process of replacing the gas valve coils using a $20 kit that is part number 279834. You can order that kit from the

Sears PartsDirect

website. Here is a direct link for that part:

Valve Coil

.

The process for opening the cabinet on this dryer is shown in the images below. You may be able to access the gas valve coils by removing the bottom front service panel and the lint duct cover as shown in the second image. Be sure that you

unplug the dryer

and shut off the gas supply before accessing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details and we will assist you further.

If you do not feel confident repairing this problem yourself, then you can have it repaired at your home by a Sears technician. Here is a link for the website:
