Mower burning/leaking oil?

Just purchased a Craftsman self-propelled mower, model # 917.374358; every time I use it it's either burning or leaking oil, have to fill it with oil before every use and by the time I'm done with the lawn (takes about an hour) there's virtually no oil left. Have used it about 5 times so far; does this need to go in for service?

I purchased this mower approx. 2 years ago now and it has started to leak oil the last time I used it this past weekend. I'm assuming because the leak appears to be coming from behind the muffler the gasket probably needs to be changed out. Is there a manual regarding this type of repair?

While it is normal to use about 1 oz per hour of operation you engine holds about 20 oz. of oil. The oil usage you described seems excessive. Since the mower is new, I would take it in for service.

Here is a link that will provide the nearest drop-off locations:

Sears Home Services

.

If I can be of further assistance please feel free to follow the thread with any questions you have along with the specifics.

I hope this helps.
