How do I replace broken washing machine timing knob with the new washing machine timing knob that I ? received through Sears parts?

Mod. 110.26732500 Kenmore washer. Previous timing knob broke apart and left the small circular metal disc on the shaft of the washer knob. The new timing knob has that circular metal disc as part of the knob, and I can't put the new knob on until that other piece of it is taken off. I can't find a way to get the circular metal disc off without possibly breaking the shaft(shank?) of the undamaged washer part that the new part goes onto.
