Craftsman snow thrower model 247.886911 only runs smooth at half choke.

When I turn the choke to "run" it does not kill the engine but the engine speed fluctuates back and forth. I've read that cleaning the main jet on the caburator might fix this problem. How do I clean the main jet on this snow thrower? Could something else be the cause of my problem?

I agree that this is most likely going to be a carburetor problem and very likely with the main jet.

You can watch

to see a little bit of information about taking the carburetor apart and what causes this condition. You will need a can of spray carb/choke cleaner to get this problem taken care of it.

You will need to take the carburetor off of the engine to have full and easy access to it to properly clean it out.
