Freezer and Refrigerator not staying cool

I had a Kenmore Smart Reach 21' Bottom Freezer Refigerator, which is about 10-11 years old. I can't locate a model number but I think it is 596.61102100.

I first noticed the ice maker was not working or producing ice. The freezer itself seems to be working but then I noticed the refrigerator was not staying cool. I turned up the control to 6 and it still seems only slightly cool. I also noticed I don't hear the fan kicking on either. I vaccumed the coils in front and also the back. I would think if the motor is bad then the freezer would not work. When I turned the fridge up to 6 I did feel some air blowing out from the vent (right under the control).

Any ideas what the problem may be???

Since you felt some air blowing from that vent in the refrigerator, this indicates that the evaporator fan is likely working and that the air flow path from the freezer to the refrigerator is at least partially clear. You could have a problem with the return vent at the bottom left side of the refrigerator. Make sure that the return air vent is not blocked. If it is frozen up, then you may be able to restore cooling by safely storing your food and unplugging the refrigerator. Open the doors and allow it to completely defrost. That process normally takes about 24 hours. Restart the refrigerator and see if it cools properly.

If it does, then you could have had a frozen return air vent or a problem with the automatic defrost system in your refrigerator. Here is a link for a video that shows how the automatic defrost system works:

Refrigerator Not Cooling Repair

. That video shows a top mount and side-by-side refrigerator. The defrost system on your bottom mount refrigerator is basically the same. The first image below shows the wiring diagram for your refrigerator. You can manually advance that defrost timer if necessary to check that defrost system. You should find that defrost timer at the bottom of your refrigerator. It is shown as KEY 15 in the parts drawing that I provided in the second image. This information may help you fix this cooling failure in your refrigerator. If you need parts, you can order them from the

Sears PartsDirect

website. Be sure that you

unplug the refrigerator

before accessing internal components.

If you need more help, reply with additional details.

If you get to a point where you need to have a service technician examine and repair this cooling failure, you can schedule service through this link:

Thanks Lyle. Well, I did find the defrost timer but the problem seems to have expanded. When I opened my freezer today, the ice was melting in the ice tray and now the freezer is not working at all. So now the problem is it is defrosting but not cooling???

Hello Charles. Check to see if that compressor is running. If the compressor is running but you are not getting any cooling in that freezer (no frost pattern on the evaporator) then you apparently have a sealed system failure that will need to be repaired by a service technician since that would involve the recovery and recharge of refrigerant (Freon). If the compressor is not running, you could have a problem with the start device on that component. A number of other problems could prevent the compressor from running as well. Reply with additional details if that compressor is not running and we may be able to help you with additional troubleshooting that you can complete yourself.
