Issues with my Whirlpool Smooth-top stove burners...

I have a whirlpool smooth-top stove, model #RF378LXKQ. One of the burners works great all the time, but three of my burners work when I turn the switch on high, but when I have them set to a low temperature, I hear a zapping, electrical sound, and the burners no longer work, like they're shorting out. What do you think the problem is? I'm assuming that the infinite switches are bad, but don't want to pay for replacements if it's not the problem.

It can be very frustrating to have an issue with your Stove. I'm sorry to hear that you are having some difficulties with your Whirlpool Smooth-Top Range. Thank you for your question and I understand your concern.

The symptoms you described indicate the infinite switches need to be replaced. The infinite switch contacts are likely worn/burnt causing the noise and preventing the element from operating at lower heat settings. Replacing the burner switches should resolve the issue.
