Kenmore 4027 leaving grease like spots after washing, what could be the cause?

I bought my Kenmore washer over a year ago. Within the last 6 months I have noticed that after washing clothes they end up coming out with spots/streaks that look like grease marks. This is most noticeable on men's button dress shirts which are usually washed on the delicate cycle. Sometimes they are small spots scattered throughout the shirt but a couple times the streaks have been huge and you can see them on the inside and outside of the shirt. I was using softener when washing the clothes and read that this could be the cause so I stopped using the softener but it still seemed to happen. I have also tried switching to powder instead of liquid detergent. I have tried putting vinegar in the softener cup and running that through a couple time thinking maybe the line is gunked up by the softener. When trying to get the spots out with stain remover and liquid dish soap it does not work. I am at a lose of what could be causing this as nothing seems to be working and have wrecked several very expensive shirts. Any ideas would be helpful!

From the description you give I suspect what is getting on the clothes is mildew.

There is no transmission or grease in this washer.

Mildew has been a big problem and can cause a blackish greasy film.

You don't tell me how your cleaning the washer but hot water and bleach is the way to attack this particular problem.

Run the hottest wash cycle you can and then add a cup or two of bleach directly into the tub. Afterward rub the rubber boot and all the creases with hot water and bleach.

In some extreme cases replacing the boot is required to fix this problem.

Try not to load the machine so that the clothes rub up against the boot.

Repeat the cleaning once a month or so to prevent the problem from building up.

Be careful not to spill fabric softener onto the clothes on the floor in front of the water.

You might try using a washer cleaner such as Washer Magic or Affresh to clean the tub. These are available from the local grocery stor. I hope this helps. You can reply with any additional details for further assistance.

Check if the water temperature seems really cold. Even a cold wash should be approximately 70 degrees.
