GE Gas Oven Temperature Erratic

My oven does not heat to the correct temperature. Usually it heats up more than I want it to (e.g. 350, and it goes to 425) I have a thermometer in the oven--which I know is accurate. The range top works perfect. Could it be the thermostat, and if so how do I get to it to replace? Or, what else could be wrong. Thank you.

Hello again Sue. Thanks for trying to post that model number. I did not find any information using that number that you posted. That appears to be a part number for a component or a document on the range. You should see a model number such as JGP307 . . . I recommend that you recheck the range for a model number and reply back if you can find one. Also, I recommend that you try to find that average temperature after the burner cycles at least 5 times as described above. The burner will cycle on and off and the temperature will normally overshoot and undershoot the actual set temperature by as much as 40 degrees. That is normal in most ranges. If you can determine that average temperature, then we may be able to adjust the control once you reply with that model number. Thanks.

Hi Lyle,

The oven is anywhere from 25 - 75 degrees off. Sometimes higher than the setting, sometimes lower. And not consistently in the number of degrees off It is GE Gas Oven, Model No. 183D5580P155. Thank you for your assistance. Marlene

Hello Sue. You could have a problem with the control. I recommend that you accurately measure the oven temperature using this procedure:

Set the oven bake temperature to 350 degrees and start the oven.

Allow the oven to preheat and then let the bake element cycle on and off at least 5 times before checking the oven temperature.

Check the oven temperature every minute for a 10 minute period and then find an average of those temperature measurements for that 10 minute period.

The actual oven temperature measured in this manner should be close to the set temperature. If it is off by less than 35 degrees, then you may be able to adjust t6he control to fix this problem. Reply with additional details and the full model number of your GE gas oven if you need help with that adjustment.

If the temperature is more than 35 degrees off or it is apparent that you have a component problem, then I recommend that you reply with additional details and the full model number of your range. We will assist you further once we receive that additional information.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link:

I failed to mention that this oven is NOT a self-clean and it does not have a preheat display. Thanks.
