How do I troubleshoot stovetop element getting too hot?

Our GE stovetop has one burner that acts up. Sometimes it behaves normally but other times even at the low-med setting it suddenly getting SUPER hot - like glowing red hot on its own. Hard to predict when this will happen and we obviously want to fix this. How do I figure out what part to replace?

I suppose a model number would be helpful. It's one of those countertop stoves. I assume the model number is visible if I flip it up?

Thanks for the question about your burner not operating properly.

Because the model number you provided appears to be incorrect I cannot be specific in my answer.

When a burner has runaway heat or intermittent heat the cause is most often the infinite switch or control. If you could recheck the model number, sometimes located under the burners on base of unit. Or if it has glass top it would be under the bottom of unit.

I hope this tip helps, if you need additional help please reply with complete model number and more details about the cook top.

Thanks Ron H.

If you get to the point where you need to have a service technician diagnose and repair this failure, you can schedule service through this link:

I suggest you add to the thread of this question and include the full model number of your range so that the expert can provide you with a more detailed answer. I did manage to find a link with a similar question. I hope this helps with the top element troubles while you wait for your expert response.
