How do I mount my over the range microwave to just the upper cabinet? (NO wall behind it)

I renovated my kitchen and changed the entire layout with the understanding that I could mount my over the range microwave to just an upper cabinet. There is no wall behind where my cabinets are mounted, they are simply hung from the ceiling in this area of my kitchen. I have a cooktop that faces out into the dining room and the microwave needs to be mounted above that. I called sears and had a new mounting plate ordered they sent one for the wall again and when I called they did not understand what I was looking for as the lady claimed she is not a repair person so has no clue what I am looking for. I cannot find instructions on your website on how to do this either. Please HELP!!! I've been trying to get this figured out for since december when the mounting plate finally came after being on back order.

I completely understand your need for some type of instructions on how to properly install your microwave to the upper cabinet. While you are waiting for your expert answer, I did some research on the unit. At this time, I was unable to locate information that would be helpful in regards to your question. Some of these questions that are asked will need specific research and will be answered by an expert with-in two business days but usually sooner.

Thank you for your question. I can understand your concern and after remodeling the kitchen, you want the appliances to fit the design.

To mount an over-the-range microwave oven under an island cabinet, you must purchase a cabinet-mounting kit. A cabinet-mounting kit is designed specifically for installation on the bottom of the cabinet and attaches to the top of the microwave. Since cabinet-mounting kits are made to work with many microwaves, they will not fit the exact dimensions of a specific microwave, so they don’t normally have the same amount of strength as wall-mounting kits.

The cabinet specifications are important as they indicate the amount of weight they can hold and what kind of ceiling joists were installed.  If you have a contractor, I would verify with them this information and if they will hold an over the range microwave and specifically how much weight.  The pictures provided show this microwave was built in 1999.  I was not able to locate information for this model and the age would be the reason. Manufacturers stop producing materials after ten years. The installation guide from each manufacturer will determine the mounting available.  At this point, I would recommend checking with the contractor first, then shopping for a new microwave that can be mounted under the cabinet without wall mount and that will fit the weight requirements. I would also recommend professional installation. I hope this information helps.  Thank you for using Manage My Life.
