Which way should the arrow on a furnace filter point?

I am not clear as to how to insert the furnace filter. Does the arrow on the side of the filter go toward the furnace or away from the actual furnace?

The short answer is that the arrow should point toward the furnace.

The filter sits in the return air duct at the point where it connects to the furnace. The purpose of the filter is to remove any contaminants before the air enters the furnace. You don't want these contaminants plugging up the inside of the furnace -- particularly the blower (fan) and blower motor. The blower creates considerable suction. If the filter is installed in the wrong orientation, there is the possibility that the filter material could get sucked into the blower.
