Why is the operator control bar on my Craftsman lawn mower loose?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

The lawnmower died. I put gas in thinking it was low but when I tried to start it again the operator control bar was loose as if the cable is broken although it does not appear to be. It can be moved freely back and forth.

When you pull the operator presence bar on a walk behind mower you pull the flywheel brake and cause it to release. You also open the switch that kills the spark to the ignition module if you don't open it. Something must have broken on the end that goes into the engine.

You might need to remove the blower housing from the engine to access the end of the cable. I suspect the end of the cable broke off.
