Why doesn't my garage door opener light turn off?

The light on my garage door opener won't shut off.

Dennis Collins,
If the light will not turn off after you disconnected the wall control, I suspect the contacts in the light relay are fused together. The only way to repair this is to replace the main control board. Doe to the age of the unit the control is no longer available. If you do not need the light, you can just unscrew the bulb. If you need the light or it is just nice to have, the unit will need to be replaced. If you would like to see the openers, we offer please click on the following link.

I am having trouble w/my garage door opener light staying on. I have tried opening and closing the door( still stays on ), I have unplugged the cord( attempt to let it reset itself ), I have remove wall control console and looked inside, I found a plug that looks to supply power to the board w/the antenna on it unplugged, the board w/the buttons for the opener looks like it might be burnt or I guess aged. the only model info I can find on anything is on the track, Genie 1/2 Hp SD9005. Ooo btw the date on the board not plugged in in the wall console has a date of 11/5/81. I think I know the answer, but I am hoping to be able to repair it w/o too much expense

Earl,

I am sorry you are having a problem with the opener. If the light will not go off on your opener the problem is going to be in the logic board. The logic board has a relay that closes to turn the light on. I suspect the contacts in that relay are fused together. The only way to repair this is to replace the logic board. I looked up the logic board for your model and I am sorry to say the replacement part is no longer available. You can always remove the light bulbs and continue to use the opener. If you would like to have working lights, the only option is to replace the opener. Please click on the following link to see one that is comparable to yours.

@Sandy: You and I came to a conclusion with your opener in the other thread.
@Lynn: You asked about this in a newer thread and I responded there. We can work on the situation on this thread or the newer thread, your choice is fine with me. I'll look forward to your reply on either thread.

Without a specific model number, I will only be able to offer the following general tips.

I assume the garage door opener has a premium wall unit that contains three buttons. One of these buttons is called a light control. Check to see if this has not been left on. Occasionally this button is accidentally activated and you may not be aware of this.

On some models the premium wall control has a motion sensor switch. This switch is heat activated, and will turn on the light

For more help with this garage door opener problem, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your garage door opener.
