My garage door opener lights will not turn off, why?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

I have a Craftsman garage door opener model number 139.53515SR. I replaced the two light bulbs in my garage door opener. Both light work, but the lights will not turn off automatically. Is there an “on/off” switch for the lights? Is there something I can do to get the light bulbs to go off when the garage door opens and closes? The light will stay on 24/7 or until the bulbs burn out.

Your symptoms indicate a defective ground at the garage door opener motor, or at the wall receptacle. The ground wire may have come loose over the years, if this is a recent occurrence.

Also check the wall control for any wires that may be loose, especially the yellow wire leading from the wall control to the motor housing. Check the screw terminal connections to be sure that a wire is not touching another wire or terminal. If the connections are good, replace the yellow wire. This wire may have come loose, shorted or broken.

There is a possibility of a relay stuck on the logic board causing the lights to stay on. If you disconnect the yellow wire from the terminal on the motor unit of the garage door opener and the lights stay on, the logic board will have to be replaced.
