My water softener is leaking. Why?

It worked fine for 5 years, it just started leaking a few months ago. It stops leaking when you put it on bypass. Its a Sears Kenmore.

Several things can cause the water softener to leak water. Someone needs to look inside the softener to see where the water is leaking from.

If there is no apparent leak in the valve area, the softener needs to be run through a regeneration and tested to see why it is leaking.

This might be best done by a technician.
