Why does my washing machine make a weird whirring sound when it agitates but not in spin?

I have a Kenmore model 11020702990 washer and in agitation it makes a loud whirring sound. It will spin fine with no noise and if I change the agitation from fast to slow the noise lowers a little. It is a high pitch whirring sound in agitation only and the other cycles work fine.

The noises change when you run a slower agitation cycle. There is no noise in spin only in agitation.

Agitation noises can be made louder by the laundry room acoustics and the transmission itself can be noisy.

I can't make a definitive answer since I can't hear the noise but as long as the washer is agitating it should be okay. If the transmission is exceptionally loud then it would need to be replaced. If the noise is the only problem I recommend you continue to use the washer till the transmission quits working.

If the noise is loud enough that you want the transmission changed I recommend a technician do the repair. There is a 5 year limited warranty on the transmission. If the washer is out of warranty and noise is the only problem I recommend using the washer till the transmission goes completely bad. A noisy gear case will not cause other part failures.
