Why does 6 inches of the heating element in my dishwasher turn bright red?

I have a model 665.16512201 Kenmore dishwasher and about 6 inches of the heating element is a very bright red and it smells.

The element is about go out and I'd recommend replacing it before it shorts out. The part number for the element is W10134009 and is available from the following site:

Sears PartsDirect

If you're comfortable and confident in your do-it-yourself skills the element is a part that can be changed without to much difficulty. The dishwasher needs to be uninstalled to access the element.
