What would cause my Maytag front loading washer to make a loud roaring noise in the spin cycle?

I have a 9 year old Maytag Neptune washer model MAH4000AWW that makes a loud roaring noise in the spin cycle. I was told if it were the tub bearings it would cost $700.00 to fix it.

Yes, $700.00 is an accurate estimate to have the outer tub assembly replaced. The outer tub assembly must be replaced when the bearings fail.
