Why does my washing machine fill up with water & drain at the same time?

I have a Maytag top load washer model MAV7600AWW. I recently replaced the timer but that did not solve my problem. As soon as the water goes in it drains and it will just keeping putting water into the machine unless I catch it and shut it off. I need to know what part I should replace.

The problem that you are describing is likely caused by fill water draining out of the washer due to an improperly installed drain configuration. The image below shows the proper installation for the drain hose. If an anti-siphon drain loop is not installed in the drain hose or the drain hose height is not at least 36" high, the fill water will drain out of the washer as it fills. I recommend that you check the drain hose configuration and make sure that it complies with the requirements described below to prevent the fill water from immediately draining out of the washer.

The timer was not the cause of this failure. The timer will not advance until the washer fills and satisfies the water level pressure switch. Once you fix the drain hose installation, the washer should work properly.
