Why are cutout sizes different for gas & electric cook tops of the same brand and size (Kenmore Elite 36")?

I have a Kenmore Elite gas cook top. I want to install a Kenmore Elite electric cook top. The cutout dimensions are different and I have granite counters.

Many of the electric cook tops now have ceramic glass tops. The burner box on the electric cook top is different from the burner box needed under the gas cook top by engineering design. The cabinet cut-out requirements depend on the size of the burner box for the cook top. If you want to replace a gas cook top with an electric one, you will normally need to adjust the cabinet cut-out as well as provide the proper electrical supply for the electric cook top.
