How do you check the drain pump on a Kenmore elite HE3 washer that is flashing an F02 code?

My HE3 washer won't spin or drain the water out and it displays an F02 code.

I just did that and connections are all ok but I did discover the grinding intermittent sound we were hearing recently (before the F2 code) is indeed the pump. I am going to try to replace the pump if its not expensive. Thanks for the help!

Checking the pump connections for continuity is a good idea. A further possible cause of slow draining is debris trapped round the ball of the 'Eco-valve' page 3-10 of the manual in the following link refers: - secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/eab852a13fbc842085256aa200643dd6/$FILE/Duet%20Job%20Aid.pdf,,,,,Your machine is manufacturd by Whirlpool and is essentially a re-badged 'Duet'. To avoid the 'mess' when removing the filter cover try connecting the suction hose of a wetvac to the discharge hose of the washer and sucking the water out. This will not work if the drain system is totally blocked. The link below details a similar problem and is eventual cure, I think. Good luck.

Update F2 coming up again. Sometimes it pumps sometimes it doesn't. I will check connections today on pump. Maybe time for a new washer after all?

Hello Fred M.,

Thanks so much for the above help. I have a Kenmore Elite he3 washer that is 8 1/2 years old and the f 2 code came up and we just thought its old well get a new one. I googled my washer to find out the capacity so we could get the same size and happened upon this site. My large item filter was almost completely plugged. I didn't even know it had a cleanable filter and as a bonus I found the code book inside this cavity. God Bless you you saved us $900. Sears and you Fred are the best!

If the washer will not drain then it won't try to spin.

The image below contains the instructions to access and check the drain pump. The first thing to try is to check the pump for obstructions. You can remove the filter and clean it out.

The pump can be blocked or it may be bad. Remove the filter and check for debris preventing the pump from working. Use a small shallow pan or heavy towel to catch the water that leaks when the filter is removed.

If the filter is clean then the pump is most likely the cause of the not draining problem. If you have a volt/ohm meter you can ohm the pump out or check voltage to the drain pump. Use caution checking voltage to the pump. The wires must be left on the pump to check voltage.

I hope this information helps to resolve this problem but submit another question with any additional details for further assistance.
