How to remove the agitator on my Kenmore washer?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

I have a Kenmore automatic clothes washer model 110.82980120, serial CX4827981 with a "Dual Action Agitator" This "Dual Action Agitator" is a separate assembly (part) that sits on top of the main (lower) agitator. It is my understanding that this assembly is part number 3360824 and it sells for $32.39. Is this correct? I want to know what the procedure is for removing the old assembly and installing the new one. I have tried pulling up on the assembly to try to break a press fit on splines, but it has not come loose after considerable upward pulling. There is no sign anywhere on the assembly of any set screw or pop off cap that would reveal a nut holding it on to the main tower shaft. It has me baffled. Please advise. Thank you.

There is cap (key#1) on top of the agitator that will need to be taken off. It should pull off with a little force or you can pry it off using a flat blade screw driver. Once you have the cap removed you will see a bolt (key#2) down the center of the agitator to remove and then you can lift the agitator off. See image below.

The auger (key#6) is part#3360824. The agitate dogs are part #80040.
