Why does my furnace make a whistling noise when the blower comes on?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

Furnace is Sears 60 Economy model #86776613. There is a loud whistling noise when the blower engages. I can remove the access door to the blower and the noise stops. Where do I look for the invasion of air that causes the whistle?

It may be starving for air. Make sure the filter is clean. If it can't draw any air, it may be trying to pull air in from around the furnace body. By removing the door it now allows a free air draw. If the filter is clean, check for an obstruction, like loose insulation, that may have blocked the return. A technician may need to check this, it could be difficult to locate.
