Why won't my Craftsman mower self propel when I pull back the drive control?

by Manage My Life Last activity date:

While mowing, my 917.374351 will no longer self propel. When pulling the drive handle it just makes a whining sound. The mower will start, run, and cut correctly, but the self propelled function will not work (just whining sound).

The Drive Control may need a slight adjustment. See image below for Drive Control adjustment procedure.

You could also have some grass or debris up under the debris shield preventing the belt from rotating and spinning the gear case pulley too.

If you unable to get your mower drive adjusted, I recommend taking the mower in for service.

Your mower has a 2-year full warranty. If this Craftsman mower fails due to manufacturer defects in material or workmanship within two years from the date of purchase, return it to any Sears’s store, Parts & Repair Center or other Craftsman outlet for free repair (or replacement if repair proves impossible).
