My riding lawn mower will not go into gear. It is a Craftsman. What could be wrong?

It is a Craftsman model 917258534, with hydrostatic automatic drive. The free wheel function works fine. It was working great.

When you say the mower won't go into gear, do you mean the gearshift won't move into position to put the transaxle into forward or reverse? If this is the case look at the linkage from the motion control lever to the transaxle. Something might have gotten loose or damaged.

If the motion control lever moves into forward and reverse, but the transaxle doesn't drive, check the belt from the engine pulley to the transaxle input pulley. The belt might be off the pulleys or broken.
