Why is there a stagnant (almost sewage) smell when we start a load in the Oasis top load washer?

I have a Kenmore Oasis top load washer. When we start a load there is an awful smell from the machine. It smells like stagnant water or sewage. Concerned the clothes aren't coming out clean either. Do you have any solutions?

To compare washing machine cleaners:

Washing machine odor is caused by:
1. Overuse of detergent. Unless washing soiled laundry no more than 1 tbsp of any detergent should be used.
2. Using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle. Dryer sheets or dryer balls are better options. Sheets can be torn in half or thirds or even reused.
3. Using mainly cold water for washing is fine but makes preventive maintenance important. A hot wash or soak as your last cycle on wash day will help dissolve left over residue.
4. In many front loading washers there is a filter/trap that catches debris. A partially clogged filter/trap can cause draining and odor problems. To save money on appliance repair fix it yourself. Consult your owners manual for instructions.

There are a couple of reasons washing machines smell. The most common of these is soap build up in the tub.

Step 1 Decide on the source of the smell. Typically the cause is the machine itself, but occasionally the water being used in the washer can be the source of the problem. If the smell resembles rotten eggs, you may need a water filtration system installed. After you eliminate any other possibilities, you can begin the treatment process.

Step 2 Prepare a 1/2 cup of baking soda and then 2 cups of white distilled vinegar in separate containers.

Step 3 Begin a wash cycle using the machine’s hottest setting. As the water rises, add the baking soda and vinegar separately.

Step 4 Let the washing machine complete a full cycle. If you notice any residue that has been loosened, use a cloth to wipe the surface clean.

Step 5 Run a cold water cycle to complete the process. You should immediately notice that the smell has been neutralized.

There is a product on the market called Smelly Washer, I have heard of this preparation helping in many instances. Please click on the following link.
