What is the difference between New England clam chowder and Manhattan clam chowder?

New England clam chowder is white. It has a milk or cream base and is made with potatoes, onion and pork or bacon -- and of course clams. It is also called Boston clam chowder.

Manhattan clam chowder is red and is more like a tomato vegetable soup with clams added for flavor.
