How can I recycle a bicycle?

I have an old bike that I'd like to put to good use. What can I do with it?

There are non-profit organizations that collect bikes for people living in poverty, either in this country or overseas. They take working or broken bikes, as well as bike parts, and use them to fix up bikes for people who need them. If none of the places listed below is near you, you may be able to ship your bike to one of them.

Working Bikes Cooperative, Chicago,

Bikes Not Bombs, Boston (

Pedals for Progress, High Bridge, New Jersey (

Bikes for the World, Washington, D.C. (

Bikes Across Borders, Austin, Texas (

An option is to offer it up on freecycle. It's a network of people that gives "stuff" to anyone for free. It's a way to save more "stuff" from going into landfills. The networks and groups are location based. And cover pretty much the whole country. I've given away quite a bit of stuff that I would have other wise trashed.
