My treadmill belt is slipping even after tightening it. Can the belts get stretched and need replacing?

I bought it at Sears in 2002. It is a proform 760 EKG. Model 831.291670. I have done as the directions have stated and centered it and tightened it. I have it tightened it as tight as it can go and it still slips. I wondered if it is very difficult to change the belt if it needs a new one.

It is possible for the walking belt or the drive belt to stretch. If the drive belt stretches it will slip on the motor or the front roller pulley and the roller will stop turning. If the walking belt is the problem, the front roller will continue to turn and the walking belt will slip.

Raise the sides of the walking belt and feel the back side of the belt and the surface of the walking board. If you feel worn or rough places, the walking belt or board need to be replaced.

Sometimes the walking belt needs lubrication. To test the walking belt lubrication, do not turn the treadmill motor on. Set the elevation to the highest level. Stand near the front of the walking belt. Push yourself firmly toward the rear of the treadmill. If the belt is properly lubricated the belt will take you to the rear edge of the treadmill and dump you off on the floor. If you move and stop, the belt needs lubricating.

The part number for the belt lubrication kit is 219168. You can buy it at []. The cost is around $4.00. The application instructions should be in the package, but in case they are not here is how to apply the lubrication.

Turn the walking belt until the belt seam is along the top of the front roller. Raise the belt on one side in the center of the walking board front to back as high as you can. Apply ½ the tube of lubrication to the walking board in a zig zag fashion moving from front to back. Move the belt until the seam comes up on top of the rear roller and lift the belt again and put the rest of the lubrication on the walking board in the same manner. Turn the treadmill on and walk on the belt for 10-20 minutes. Walk all over the belt to distribute the lubrication evenly on the walking belt and board.

Replacing the walking belt is not difficult, but it takes some time. I am sending you some instructions for replacing the belt. You can decide if you want to attempt it.

The instructions for replacing the belt on a treadmill have never been printed. There are so many models with different variations it would be very difficult to do. Technicians are taught the basics at training sessions and are expected to adapt to the model they are working on.

Basically you disconnect the power to the treadmill and remove the motor hood. Remove the drive belt from the motor and front roller.

Remove the side rails and the rear end caps. Remove the walking board.

Remove the adjusting bolts for the rear roller and remove both front and rear rollers.

Slide the walking belt off the right side of the rollers.

Reverse these instructions for installation of the new belt.
