How do I remove black stains on my glass cooktop?

These are the cleaning instructions from a typical Use And Care Guide for a glass top range:

CERAMIC GLASS

Do not use steel wool, abrasive powder cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover or ammonia because damage may occur.

Always wipe with a clean, wet cloth or sponge and dry thoroughly to prevent streaking and staining.

Use Cooktop Polishing Creme regularly to help prevent

scratches, pitting and abrasions and to condition the cooktop.

A Cooktop Scraper is also recommended for certain soils.

Light to moderate soil

Paper towels or clean damp sponge:

Clean while the cooktop is still warm. You may want to wear

oven mitts while doing so.

Sugary spills (jellies, candy, syrup)

Using Cooktop Scraper:

Clean while the cooktop is still warm. You may want to wear

oven mitts while doing so.

Cooktop Polishing Creme and clean damp paper towel:

Clean as soon as cooktop has cooled down. Rub creme into

surface with a damp paper towel or soft cloth. Continue

rubbing until white film disappears.

Note

:

Plastic or foods with a high sugar content:

These types of soils need to be removed immediately if spilled or melted onto the ceramic cook top surface.

Permanent damage

(such as pitting of the cook top surface) may occur if not removed immediately. After turning the surface elements OFF, use a razor blade scraper or a metal spatula with a mitt and scrape the soil from the hot surface. Allow the cook top to cool, and use the same method for heavy or burned on soils.

Two excellent products for cleaning a stain from a glass cooktop are Bon Ami and Barkeepers Friend. They are available at grocery stores and do not contain abrasives, so they won't scratch the finish. The scraper the above instructions refer to is a razor blade knife commonly used for removing paint from windows, and can be purchased at a hardware store or some grocery stores.

Use a damp sponge or wet clean cloth to apply the Bon Ami or Barkeepers friend liberally on the stained area. Hold the scraper at about a 30 degree angle and scrape the stain off.

Treating your glass top with the Cooktop Polishing Creme regularly will prevent stains from adhering to the glass and will make future cleaning easier.
