How do I diagnose if the circuit board has failed in my Kenmore Ultra Soft 275 water softener?

Before I buy a new circuit board, is there anything else that could be wrong. I have a Kenmore Ultra Soft water softener model 625.388270. I think the circuit board got wet and burnt out. When plugged in nothing comes up on the screen.

In order to diagnose if the board has failed or possibly the power transformer you will need a voltage meter capable of measuring 24 volts AC. Access the back of the timer control board and measure the voltage across the two terminals marked AC input. If you measure 24 Volts AC, replace the control/timer board. If you do not measure voltage, disconnect the power transformer from the power source and then disconnect the two AC voltage input wires from the board. Place your meter leads across the two wire leads and then plug the power transformer back into a working outlet and see if 24 volt AC is present. If there is no voltage reading, the transformer is bad or the wall outlet is dead. Check the wall outlet for voltage before condemning the transformer as bad.
