What part do I need for my Kenmore washer model 110.26842692 that won't spin but will drain?

The washer is about 12 years old and has not been spinning well (clothes were still pretty wet after the spin). Today it just made a screeching sound when trying to spin out. It did drain, but the barrel won't spin. I think it may be the motor coupler? If so what part do I need, and how do I fix it? Any help you can give would be great!

Check to see if the washer will agitate even though it won't spin. If it will agitate then the motor coupler is okay. If it does not agitate then you could have a broken motor coupler. The images below show how to remove the cabinet and access the motor coupler. Be sure that you

unplug the washer

before accessing internal components. Also, internal metal edges can be sharp. Protective gloves are recommended.

The part number for the motor coupler is 285753A. You can order this part from the

Sears PartsDirect

website.

If the washer agitates but does not spin then you could have a worn clutch or a failed basket drive. A failed transmission would also prevent the basket from spinning.
